Track & resist self-harm urges

Features & Capabilities

Calm Harm is a free app developed for teen mental health charity stem4 by Clinical Psychologist Dr. Nihara Krause. Built on evidence-based Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) principles, it helps users ride the urge to self-harm by selecting activities across Comfort, Distract, Express Yourself, Release, and Random, plus a mindful breathing technique. The app is based on NHS standards and ORCHA-approved to support safe, private use.

It provides immediate coping strategies to break the cycle of self-harm, builds a safety net of helpful thoughts and behaviors, and offers journaling and signposts to further support. Calm Harm is private and anonymous, requires no user accounts, and data may be reset if you reinstall. It has earned awards including Health Tech Awards, Digital Leaders 100, and Third Sector Awards.

User Reviews

Users overwhelmingly praise Calm Harm as an effective, discreet self-harm coping tool that stays free and easy to use. They appreciate the calming visuals, the ability to track progress and build a long streak, and its applicability to anxiety and other emotions, not just self-harm. The app is widely lauded for being accessible to diverse users, including neurodivergent individuals, and for offering practical, do-able activities. Common requests focus on expanding customization: more activities, breathing patterns, widgets, and a dark mode. Occasional bugs, like freezing, are noted but do not overshadow its overall usefulness.

this app helped me through so much. it is so perfect in every way shape and form. the little characters are so cute and soothing and the app itself reminds me of a nice cool bed to lay down in when all things go wrong. I always had an issue with storage but this heaven sent gift doesn’t even take up 50 mb. from the bottom of my heart id like to thank the developer(s) with every fiber in my body and every place on it that is clean of scars. thank you

I personally don’t struggle with self-harm, but I do have issues with addictive tendencies. It seems like there’s a surprising amount of overlap when it comes to how self-harm and addictive urges work, so I tried Calm Harm out to see if it’d help. Sure enough, it does. I was wondering if the dev team might be able to add some sort of offering specifically for people who struggle with addiction as well. Not to diminish the importance of helping others who struggle with self-harm, that’s an issue close to my heart in many ways as well. But I think many of the techniques used in the existing app could also be applied to addiction recovery. Thank you, devs, for creating this app. You’re doing God’s work.
