dataslayer

Debug and test tag management (Google Tag Manager, DTM, Tealium) and analytics implementations.

Dataslayer is a Chrome extension that integrates seamlessly into Chrome Developer Tools to monitor and debug tag management data layers. It supports popular tag management systems such as Google Tag Manager, Adobe Launch, Adobe DTM, Tealium, TagCommander, and custom JavaScript data layers.

With Dataslayer, users can easily view changes in multiple data layers, including those within embedded iframes. It also decodes analytics tags from Google Analytics (all versions including Universal Analytics and App + Web), Adobe Analytics, and Floodlight, making it an essential tool for web analysts and developers to test and verify their tagging implementations efficiently.

User reviews

Dataslayer is highly valued by users as a helpful and indispensable Chrome extension for debugging data layers, GA, and GTM configurations with an accessible interface and solid accuracy. It is recommended frequently. However, users also report issues such as an awkward interface, occasional inaccuracies or discrepancies in event reporting, and reliability problems like the extension disappearing or not working on local sites. Some bugs can prevent tag firing. Overall, its benefits outweigh its flaws for many analytics professionals.
Pros
  • Dataslayer is praised for being a very useful and indispensable tool for debugging data layers, Google Analytics (GA), and Google Tag Manager (GTM) configurations.
  • It has an easy to use interface that allows quick confirmation and visualization of events and data layers without relying solely on the console.
  • It is considered more accurate or at least helpful compared to GTM Preview and Debug mode, making debugging easier and faster.
  • Supports working with different tag management systems like Tealium and provides access to data elements.
  • Users recommend it to colleagues and clients, indicating strong satisfaction and reliability.
Cons
  • The interface is sometimes described as awkward, cluttered, or unreadable, making it hard to work with the presented data effectively.
  • Dataslayer sometimes shows discrepancies or inaccurate results compared to other tools like Google Tag Assistant or GTM-debugger, leading to confusion and mistrust.
  • There are reports of the extension suddenly disappearing from the developer toolbar or stopping to work properly, particularly on local development sites or with certain analytics tags like Adobe Launch.
  • A noted bug is that it might interfere with tag firing, causing analytics tags not to fire in some scenarios.
  • There are occasional feature gaps, such as lack of support currently for App+Web Analytics, which users hope will be addressed.
