User reviews

Users appreciate Bitwarden's robust free and open-source password management with features like integrated TOTP and cross-device synchronization. It is favored for security and mobility compared to competitors. However, many report issues with the browser extension breaking after updates, inconsistent auto-fill performance, and annoyances from the recent UI redesign. Resetting of timeout security settings and multiple unlock requirements also cause user frustration. Despite these issues, Bitwarden remains highly regarded for its core functionality and continual improvements.
Pros
  • Supports integrated TOTP (two-factor authentication) which users find very useful.
  • Free and open-source with strong password management and generation features.
  • Synchronizes passwords well across devices, providing good mobile integration.
  • Simple and effective password management compared to competitors like LastPass.
  • Active development with continual updates and useful new features like password breach checks and item categorization.
Cons
  • Browser extension frequently breaks or hangs after browser or extension updates, requiring reinstallation and re-login with security keys.
  • Auto-fill functionality is inconsistent or stopped working properly on some websites and browsers, causing frustration.
  • Recent UI redesign made it more difficult to use common features, like filling credentials by clicking the whole entry or accessing breach check.
  • Timeout settings get reset unexpectedly to default after quitting the browser, which affects security preferences.
  • Multiple instances require separate unlocking (desktop app and browser extension), with Windows Hello authentication sometimes hanging.

I love Bitwarden, I've used the paid version for years, but every time there's an error (even if it gets fixed before I notice) on the browser extension you have to uninstall, reinstall, relogin with the yubikey, etc. This used to be a rare occurrence that just happened whenever the browser did an update, now it's every time the browser and bitwarden do an update and more often extra times. It fully breaks the extension, not just a security logout, so it's a bit of a headache. Otherwise a great password manager that allows for MFA device authentication and doesn't do some auto-login suspicious workarounds to avoid actually using your yubikey at these times.
