The newer preview mode for Google Tag Manager, uses an external extension or a window.popup and postMessaging for working, this makes the preview mode to add an unnecesary delay ( 1.5s to 3s ) seconds when loading the GTM container, this is killer when working on SPA or pages where you currently has to work with race conditions.

This extension, will just block the native GTM Preview functionality in order to be able to preview the current container draft with the same enviroment as you will have on production. Also this should be preventing all these disconnections issues.

The handicap on this, is that you will need to use some other tools for debugging your implementations, which is not a big issue for most people.
