User Reviews

Reviewers largely condemn the shift from Focus Keeper to Pond, citing loss of simplicity and the timer's purpose. The top issues are privacy-driven data-permission requests, the move to paid features, and a bloated, multi-tool interface that distracts from study. While early versions were praised as ad-free, minimal, and easy to use, many now feel the app no longer serves as a straightforward Pomodoro timer and is more of a screen-time management app. These core changes drive the negative sentiment across multiple reviews.
Pros
  • Simple, easy-to-use Pomodoro timer that starts quickly with a clean interface.
  • Minimalist, distraction-free design that keeps the focus on study sessions.
  • Originally free and ad-free with no ongoing subscriptions.
  • Reliable timer with core features like adjustable session lengths and pauses.
  • Alerts (including watch notifications) help stay on task without pulling attention away.
Cons
  • The app was replaced with Pond, a bloated redesign that ruins the original simple Pomodoro experience.
  • Now it asks for access to screen-time data and other permissions, raising privacy concerns.
  • A paywall/subscription was introduced, reducing what was previously free.
  • The interface feels bloated with extra features, moving away from a focused timer.
  • Loss of the core Pomodoro functionality in favor of screen-time management.

Like others, I was surprised to see a once-great timer app completely change into something else with no warning. Originally it was the Focus Keeper app, and now it’s a garbage app that wants your data.

I like the idea of this app and the features, but it would be nice if it worked a bit better. The active notifications banner stays wide so I can’t see the clock or battery indicator whenever a block period is going. The block scheduling also just doesn’t work reliably. I just had to play with the settings on a block to get the app to notice that it was scheduled and actually activate it. It’s also weird to market a nice simple, bug-free pomodoro timer app (which attracted lots of appropriately great reviews) and then suddenly replace it on everyone’s devices with this really heavy, kind of invasive app with paid features. I actually like what “Pond” is going for but… kinda skeevy tbh. And buggy.

This used to be a pomodoro timer and is now a spyware app (asked for screen time access?!?!).
