Open Instagram and "#3 today, #184 overall. Really?" comes up first. No waiting, no lecture - just the number, and a choice.

You opened Instagram. You don't know why. Your hand just went there.

Really? steps in at that moment.

When you open an app you've registered, this comes up first:

3rd time today 184th time so far Really?

[ No, not now ] Open it anyway

That's all it does. It doesn't make you wait or lecture you. It shows you the number and makes you choose. The judgment is yours.

■ How it works

• Connect Screen Time once and choose all the apps you want to watch in one picker
• If you go in, the app opens for 15 minutes and Really? returns afterward
• Turning away does not raise the number. Only going in is counted
• From the very first time, you transcribe the line on the screen before you can go in. Copy out your count, or a study-motivation line - you choose which
• From the 5th time the line grows longer: copy out your count and your goal and the days left come first; copy a motivation line and two lines are joined
• You decide how many entries a day skip the writing. It starts at 0; lowering it applies now, raising it applies the next day
• The day turns over at 4 AM. YouTube at 2 AM counts as yesterday

• Today's count, running total, and a turned-away chart (all apps or one)
• 1 goal date — shown as a countdown on the prompt screen (exams, tests, deadlines)

• Watch up to 50 apps
• Daily entry limit — it doesn't block you; past the limit you transcribe that you're going over
• Usage reminders — at 5 and 10 minutes inside the 15-minute window you opened (timing is up to iOS)
• Active hours — it only asks during the hours you set
• Save and switch between several goal dates
• Unlimited lines of your own
• My Pattern: how often you tried and how often you turned away, and the hours you waver most
• Monthly or yearly auto-renewing subscription, or a one-time lifetime pass (no renewal)

■ Good to know

• While an app is locked, its notifications don't arrive either — Apple blocks the app and its notifications together. Outside active hours they arrive normally
• There is no server, so your app list, lines, and records live on each device separately
