Japanese Walking Method Timer
Free. No ads. The Japanese Walking Method, timed right. Built by someone who actually walks.
Three minutes fast. Three minutes slow. For 30 minutes. That's the Japanese Walking Method, and this is the timer for it.
THE METHOD
Dr. Hiroshi Nose and his team at Shinshu University in Japan developed Interval Walking Training. The protocol: 3 minutes of brisk walking, then 3 minutes slower. Repeat for 30 minutes, three times a week. Their research has followed people on this regimen for more than 15 years.
WHY THIS APP
Most interval walking apps feel like a gym timer with a sticker on it. This one wasn't.
— Audio cues at every transition, so your phone can stay in your pocket
— A 5-second beep countdown before each phase changes
— Live Activity on the lock screen and Dynamic Island
— Voice cue subtitles, for walking with one earbud or none
— Sakura petals on the screen. They speed up when you do, and slow down when you do.
— Drawn from Tokyo, not from a HIIT app
FREE. NO ADS. NO TRACKING.
The whole app — every session length — free. No ads. No upsells. No nag screens. The Japanese Walking Method should not cost money to run.
FEATURES
— Three session lengths: 18, 30, or 42 minutes
— Outdoor mode and Treadmill mode. Treadmill mode shows your target fast and slow mph and lets you adjust them mid-session.
— Calorie estimate per session, based on your weight, height, age, and activity level
— Streak counter and history of your last 30 sessions
— Keeps running when your screen is locked or your phone is in your pocket
— Audio mixes with your music, no fighting your playlist
— Nothing leaves your phone. Sessions, streaks, settings — all local.
WHO IT'S FOR
For anyone who wants to walk on purpose. The 50-year-old whose doctor said "walk more." The TikTok viewer who saw the method and wants to do it right. The office worker getting back into movement. People watching their blood pressure who don't want to start jogging.
HOW IT WORKS
- Open the app
- Pick 18, 30, or 42 minutes
- Pick Outdoor or Treadmill
- Tap START
- Put the phone in your pocket
- Walk. The app tells you when to switch.
NOTES
This is a fitness timer, not a medical device. Nothing here is medical advice. Check with your doctor before starting any new exercise routine, especially if you have a heart condition, are pregnant, or have blood-pressure concerns.
