User Reviews

MTB Project is praised for its trail maps and planning features and is often seen as stronger than Trailforks or AllTrails. However, recent updates tied to OnX have caused major stability and UX problems: frequent crashes, especially when zooming or navigating, spammy OnX prompts, and poor performance in areas with limited service. The app also lacks built-in navigation and can have outdated maps in some regions. If stability and offline navigation improve, it remains a strong MTB resource; as it stands, performance is the top concern.
Pros
  • Excellent trail maps that are accurate and easy to read
  • Great for planning rides and discovering trails
  • Strong MTB-specific database; often considered better than Trailforks or AllTrails
  • Works reasonably offline / without constant cell service
Cons
  • Frequent crashes and instability, sometimes rendering the app unusable
  • OnX integration causes spammy prompts and slowdowns, steering users toward OnX
  • No built-in navigation or turn-by-turn guidance; navigation features are limited
  • Map interactions (zooming) can crash the app, with lag in areas of spotty service
  • Some trail maps/data are not up-to-date in certain regions

Made by the same creators of Hiking Project, this is an amazing app. No big companies asking for their $30 premium for the most basic of features. No ads, only just pure trails and community help. Please let me marry these developers.

The app doesn’t make it easy to reset your password. Also there are no longer GPX options to download to a Garmin.

Ever since combing with onx the app just crashes out when loading longer routes. They need to put more development resources into it if I am paying for it with an Onx account.
