User Reviews

Users praise Trail Run Project for its extensive, offline-capable trail database and planning tools, but repeatedly criticize crashes, update-induced glitches, data quality issues, and lack of GPX export.
Pros
  • Extensive database of trails with detailed maps, making it a go-to resource for finding new routes.
  • Offline maps and use without cell signal once downloaded.
  • Helpful elevation profiles and visual cues (green/yellow/red zones) to plan runnable sections.
  • Free data and a strong community of reviews that add value.
  • Generally solid UX/UI and planning tools that aid trail planning.
Cons
  • Frequent crashes and instability, with reviews reporting crashes up to ~90% of usage.
  • Recent updates cause major UI glitches and navigation issues, making the app nearly unusable.
  • Crowdsourced trail data leads to mislabeling/duplicates and inconsistent accuracy; submitting or updating trails is difficult.
  • Lack of GPX export/download limits offline use and compatibility with other devices.
  • Data/website sync barriers and inconsistent data quality across regions.

OnX bought this app- along with the other “protect” apps- some time ago, squeezed all of the trail data they could out of it, and input that data into their subscription-based mapping software and essentially kicked this app to the curb. It crashes ~90% of the time I use it. I’d expect a higher standard from a company based in Colorado.

It is simple and to the point. This app is a tool, and it works really well. It has the two features I need it to have: an efficient, responsive UI, and a rich database of routes. The only feature I would suggest is the ability to export routes as GPX files to use on my watch. But, when I need it I recreate the route in GAIA, so it’s not a big deal. Go Running Project!

I love the idea of this app and use it a lot on both the web and mobile. But over the years the UI and ability to load the data has grown worse and worse. At this point the app on my device crashes about 50% of the time.
