User Reviews

Users praise Hiking Project for being free with useful, no-frills trail information, driving directions to trailheads, and a community-driven database. However, repeated complaints about crashes, unstable offline use, poor offline support, login/sync issues, and a shift to OnX with ads/paywalls undermine the experience. Additionally, weak search, missing hikes, limited GPX support, and data accuracy concerns (outdated or incorrect trail data) are common. Overall, strong fundamentals exist, but reliability and access issues recur across many reviews.
Pros
  • Free to use and provides useful, no-frills trail information.
  • Driving directions all the way to the trailhead.
  • Community-driven data with generally reliable trail information.
  • Easy-to-use interface with well-designed, informative content.
  • Broad trail coverage and reliability compared to rivals (e.g., AllTrails).
Cons
  • Frequent crashes and overall instability; app often won't open or crashes during use.
  • Offline usability is poor; maps don't load offline and large state downloads are required.
  • OnX acquisition introduced ads and paid features, reducing free access and usefulness.
  • Search is unintuitive, missing hikes, and limited functionality (no GPX download; login/sync issues).
  • Data accuracy and updates are inconsistent (incorrect trail data, outdated information).

Used to be a great app when REI owned it. Now OnX bought it and turned it into a nagware POS. Their own app is also a nagware wrapper around MapBox that you must pay for to see any info on any trails. Heck all these companies trying to profit from public parks and taxpayer-funded resources. Just go to OpenTrailMap.us instead. Don’t give private equity clowns more money for things you can get for free.
