(No cell reception required!) • Enjoy high-resolution photos and detailed topographical trail maps. • We’ll sync with your to-do list and check-ins on PowderProject.com.

Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

User Reviews

Powder Project is strong for planning with helpful reviews and maps and benefits from REI integration and an angle-scrubbing feature. Repeated user concerns focus on (1) preferring slope data in degrees, (2) unreliable maps, and (3) patchy content coverage such as missing AZ areas and fewer trails after updates.
Pros
  • Helpful trail reviews and maps for planning trips and safety.
  • Positive REI ecosystem integration and planning resources.
  • Feature to scrub the route's descent angle is a useful tool.
  • Growing route database and encouragement to get outside.
Cons
  • Slope steepness shown in percent instead of degrees; users want degree-based slope information.
  • Maps sometimes fail to load or render terrain (blank screens or missing data).
  • Content gaps and reduced trail coverage, including missing regions like Arizona.

I absolutely hate using this app now that the owner forces you to make an onX account to use the services on a desktop. I’ve gone back to actual book guides because they, at least, don’t force me jump extra hurdles at a whim to access data that’s user-created and maintained. I’m not sure why users are being forced into onX, but stop trying to make it happen without their consent.

It would make sense to give the steepness in degrees, rather than % grade. Most avalanche teaching and forecasts talk about degrees.

There is some good skiing in Northern AZ and we even have our own avalanche center. Unfortunately nothing in the app about AZ, either in the Flagstaff or White Mountain areas.
