OverbiteWX Firefox

OverbiteWX

Re-enables the Gopher protocol in Firefox 56 and above, allowing you to enter Gopher URLs and click on Gopher links. Because WebExtensions does not yet have a TCP sockets API, this version redirects your requests to the Floodgap Public Gopher Proxy.

Features & Capabilities

OverbiteWX is a Firefox extension that restores access to Gopher protocol URLs and links in Firefox 56 and newer. Due to current WebExtensions limitations (lack of TCP sockets API), OverbiteWX sends Gopher requests to the Floodgap Public Gopher Proxy, which converts Gopher content into HTML for seamless browsing within Firefox.

This extension serves as the successor to OverbiteFF, adapting classic Gopher support to modern browser requirements. Users simply install OverbiteWX, select it as the Gopher protocol handler, and gain easy access to Gopher sites via clickable links. Future updates aim to support direct Gopher connections as WebExtensions APIs evolve. For those seeking direct connections now, an experimental companion add-on, OverbiteNX, provides native connection capabilities via an additional open-source component.

OverbiteWX ensures that enthusiasts and researchers can continue exploring the Gopher protocol on contemporary Firefox versions without hassle, preserving this classic internet protocol for modern web users.
