Proxy Toggle Firefox

Proxy Toggle

Toggle between direct connection and a single proxy server via a toolbar icon.

Features & Capabilities

Proxy Toggle is a user-friendly Firefox extension that lets you switch effortlessly between a direct internet connection and a single proxy server using a toolbar icon or keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Shift+Y by default).

Key features include support for HTTP, HTTPS, SOCKS4, and SOCKS5 proxies, username/password authentication, remote DNS (SOCKS only), and the option to bypass proxy for local networks. It overrides Firefox's standard proxy settings for simplicity and ease of use without additional complexity like multiple proxies or exceptions. Users should configure proxy details on the options page before use. The extension respects theme colors if enabled via about:config and requires "Access your data for all websites" permission for proxy request handling. The source code is transparent and available for review.

User Reviews

Users praise Proxy Toggle for its simplicity and one-click proxy switching, and for supporting SOCKS5/HTTPS proxies. It improves workflow by avoiding deep settings navigation. The main recurring drawbacks concern Android compatibility (not working or missing setup options) and switch visibility on dark themes, though fixes for dark theme issues have been noted. Android support remains the top concern for several users.
Pros
  • Very easy to use with a one-click proxy toggle.
  • Supports SOCKS5 and HTTPS proxies.
  • Significantly speeds up proxy switching by avoiding settings navigation.
  • Generally reliable on desktop Firefox with positive feedback on dark-theme usability after fixes.
Cons
  • Android Firefox support is inconsistent or broken (no proxy setup page, not working on some devices/versions).
  • Hard to see the switch on dark themes (dark-theme visibility issue).
Recent reviews
Simple and effective. Instantly switches over to the proxy. My use case is an SSH dynamic port forward (ssh -D <ip>), so this is ideal when I want to jump on/off the local network and go via that SOCKS proxy. I have a dynamic titlebar colour and when it's dark I can't see the icon, so it would be an enhancement request to have the black logo with a 1px white outline. This would cover all dark/light use cases. Good job, nice plugin, easy to configure and just works.
