FAQ (frequently asked questions)

Q: How do I get word pronunciations working in Windows 10?

A: Unfortunately, the Windows 10 Thai voice package is not available to your Chrome browser by default. The option to pronounce words will not appear in Thai Tutor in that case. To enable, follow these steps.

Install the Thai voice package in Windows 10

  1. Go to Settings app > Time & Language > Speech (left navigation bar).
  2. Under Speech, find "Manage voices" section. Click "Add voices".
  3. In the list of options, scroll down to the Thai voice and install it.
  4. If the Thai voice could not install properly, try going to "Language" (left navigation bar), find the "Preferred languages" section, and click "Add a language". Find the Thai language and install it.

Next, modify your Windows 10 registry to enable the Thai voice in Chrome.

*** Disclaimer: The remaining steps involve modifying your Windows registry. If performed incorrectly, it could harm your system. Only proceed if you are comfortable doing so. We will not be responsible if anything goes wrong.

  1. Make sure you are logged in with an account that has administrative privileges.
  2. Open Registry Editor app.
  3. Navigate the registry tree to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Speech_OneCore\Voices\Tokens
  4. Under Tokens, you should see a list of all your available voices. Locate a Thai voice entry with language code "thTH" in the name. For example, "MSTTS_V110_thTH_Pattara".
  5. Right click on the Thai voice entry and select "Export" to export the .reg file. Give it a name like "Thai voice".
  6. Open the saved .reg file with the Notepad editor.
  7. In Notepad, replace ALL occurrences of "Speech_OneCore" with "Speech" in the registry paths. For example, change: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Speech_OneCore\Voices\Tokens\MSTTS_V110_thTH_Pattara to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Speech\Voices\Tokens\MSTTS_V110_thTH_Pattara Do this everywhere it occurs in the file. There should be at least 2 references.
  8. Save the file and close Notepad.
  9. Double-click the modified .reg file. This will merge it into your registry.
  10. The Windows 10 Thai voice should now be available to your Chrome browser and the Thai Tutor extension. You may need to restart Chrome or restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Very useful, thanks! It's super fast and responsive, I also like the settings that you can change. Edit: -Auto-pronounce setting doesn't get saved across tabs, I always have to switch it on again -it would be cool if Keyboard shortcuts could be disabled, I can't use option+n (on Mac OS) to type ~ anymore because that for example opens the extensions settings

Would be better if we also add the word in english alphabet for beginners who don't know of to read the words yet. I hope you can add the feature soon.

Great extension for learning Thai. It is well designed, convenient, and easy to use. The hover over feature runs super fast and makes it effortless to extract Thai words from Thai text, translate these words, and pronounce these words. The quiz feature works just like physical flash cards and is a great tool to help you remember the meanings of Thai words.

Extension safety

Risk impact
