User Reviews

Users praise play:Sub for strong self-hosted server support, handling large libraries, stable playback, CarPlay availability, and extensive customization. Recurrent negatives center on crashes and stability problems, library/metadata desync, CarPlay usability issues, and requests for enhanced EQ and audio controls. Overall, it’s valued for server-backed playback and customization but struggles with reliability and data consistency in multi-device contexts.
Pros
  • Excellent compatibility with self-hosted music servers (Navidrome/Airsonic/Subsonic) and the ability to handle very large libraries.
  • CarPlay support is available, with reviews praising its presence and usefulness.
  • Playback tends to be reliable and stable relative to other iOS music clients when connected to a server.
  • Highly customizable UI and settings enable nit-picky tweaks to suit individual workflows.
  • Good organization of a personal music collection and effective library management for local libraries.
Cons
  • Crashes and instability during playback, with high CPU/memory usage leading to terminations.
  • Library/database desync and metadata issues (e.g., artists showing 0 albums, inconsistent latest music, cache-related problems).
  • CarPlay usability issues (limited navigation, some data not loading, and general reliability concerns).
  • Requests for improved audio controls, notably a true parametric EQ and easier access to EQ in the now-playing surface.

So far, this is the only client I have found (and I have tried MANY) that consistently works exactly how I expect it to. No gaps between tracks, no issues when scrolling around intra-track, and no extra fluff functionality. Everything just works. Do yourself a favor and skip the other apps and just get this one if you’re looking for a Subsonic/Navidrome compatible app!

Ok, I have tried substreamer, Amperfy, they are free and have their own pros and cons. I think of trying paid one maybe have better optimization although the UI is not that good. But it turns out I am facing the biggest issue even when I try these players. It will always stopped playing after go to background in about 1-2 minutes. And I’ve tried to reach out it’s 5 stars service also no response😂so anyone can help me?
