Features & Capabilities

SubStreamer is a free, open-source Chrome extension that turns your Subsonic-compatible server into a personal streaming service. Stream in full quality or download for offline listening on iPhone and iPad. It’s ad-free, subscription-free, and designed to keep your music on your own server, with no data collection. It’s verified with Navidrome, Subsonic, Gonic, Nextcloud Music, Ampache, and works with Airsonic-Advanced, Funkwhale, Supysonic, and other Subsonic API servers.

Beyond playback, SubStreamer offers smart mixes based on your listening history—time-of-day playlists, deep cuts, era blends, and a custom mix builder. It provides listening analytics (top artists, hours, heatmaps), robust library management (ratings, favorites, playlists), and flexible playback controls (lock screen, background playback, speed, shuffle). The app emphasizes privacy with offline sync and no analytics or accounts required; everything stays between you and your server. Open-source under GPL-3.0; code available at github.com/ghenry22/substreamer.

User Reviews

SubStreamer shines with strong Navidrome/self-hosted music support and a sleek, intuitive UI, plus solid offline caching. However, users frequently report playback instability (crashes, buffering, AirPlay interruptions), a lack of a universal all-songs view, and some early UI bugs. Overall, it’s a standout Navidrome client on iOS that could benefit from reliability refinements and a more complete library browsing experience.
Pros
  • Excellent Navidrome/self-hosted music support; repeatedly praised as the best Navidrome/iOS client and works well with Navidrome servers.
  • Sleek, polished, and intuitive user interface that makes navigation and playback feel smooth.
  • Strong offline capabilities, including downloading entire playlists into cache and clear separation between cached and downloaded music.
  • Good discovery-oriented home screen and overall feature richness for self-hosted music experiences, with positive feedback on server integration and usability.
Cons
  • Playback stability issues across many reviews, including frequent stops, crashes when rewinding/fast-forwarding, long buffering on cellular, and interruptions during AirPlay.
  • Missing a global 'view all songs' library view; navigation is limited to albums or artists, making it harder to locate individual tracks.
  • Early bugs and UI glitches (such as splash-screen issues on older devices and occasional unresponsiveness) and general stability concerns during initial usage.
Recent reviews
I just recently got into self-hosting my collection and I needed an app to replace the other streaming apps I was paying way too much for. The interface is intuitive. The only feature I wish it had was a way to automatically download favorite songs or just make a playlist since you can download playlists. Maybe that would be harder since playlists are created and saved on the server-side? Still, this app was the first one I tried and I have been loving it!

This is probably the best designed ui for streaming your music media, I really how the layout is only thing would make it perfect is adding the option to move the order of the queue.
