Features & Capabilities

Free single-staff version of NotateMe - the ground-breaking music composition software from Neuratron, featuring powerful handwriting recognition and PhotoScore Now printed score capture.

iPad Pro & Apple Pencil recommended for best results.

  • Quickly and accurately enter music notation with your finger or stylus.

  • Write music on the train, in a plane, by a lake, or just sitting comfortably on your sofa!

  • Simple, intuitive interface with little to distract you from your creativity - similar to writing with pen and paper, but with instant playback, editing and a score suitable for printing at the end!

  • Includes PhotoScore Now - A free 1-staff version of the PhotoScore Add-In (In-App Purchase) for full NotateMe. Take photos of printed sheet music with your device's camera, so you can play back and edit them with NotateMe Now! Recognizes 5-line staves and most markings including chords, flags, beams, rests, accidentals, articulation marks, clefs, key signatures, time signatures, tuplets, slurs, ties, hairpins and text including lyrics, dynamics and instrument names. Note: Requires 5MP camera & 1 GB RAM - so not for iPad 2, iPhone 4S, iPad Mini (1st gen) or earlier.

  • Great when learning or teaching music notation.

  • Email MusicXML and MIDI files of your scores to friends or other musicians. Open in desktop notation packages.

  • NotateMe Now recognizes a wide range of music notation symbols, including notes (with solid, open, and slanted noteheads), flags, beams, leger lines, multiple voices per staff, chords, rests, accidentals (natural, sharp, double sharp & flat), augmentation dots, ties, slurs, hairpins, clef changes, key signatures. Barlines, clefs, time signatures and triplets are added automatically.

  • It works while you write - the printed score updates automatically without you needing to stop and wait.

  • If NotateMe Now doesn’t recognize your style immediately, keep at it, as it will adjust. Leave clear space between symbols and make markings clearer with further strokes if any transcription errors occur. If you experience problems, tap 'Help Improve NotateMe' from the Export menu and we will analyze your handwriting to help us improve NotateMe further.

User Reviews

NotateMe Now promises a strong workflow: handwriting notation with Apple Pencil and playback, plus quick input and editing. Reviews praise the concept, Apple Pencil support, and the ability to capture melodies quickly. However, users repeatedly report major flaws: unreliable recognition (rhythms, beams, drums), frequent crashes and stability problems (including launch failures), and function gaps that push users toward the upgrade price. The free version is limiting, and many feel updates are slow or the app appears abandoned. Overall, the idea is compelling, but the app is currently buggy, with usability and reliability issues undermining serious workflow use.
Pros
  • Handwritten notation input with Apple Pencil and playback
  • Apple Pencil support enables fast, natural handwriting input
  • Fast input with finger and drag-and-drop editing
  • Good for quickly capturing melodies and ideas
Cons
  • Recognition is unreliable and often misreads notes, rhythms, and symbols (including drums)
  • Frequent crashes and stability issues; some users can't even open the app
  • Free version is very limited and the $40 upgrade is viewed as too expensive given bugs
  • Clunky UI and usability problems; not intuitive; some text/font cut off on small screens
  • Photo score/input features are unreliable or not working as advertised

The app is good. It’s not the best but it’s OK. It wasn’t set up very well, but it works good like when I take a picture of sheet music and then I click the play button. It plays the picture that I took very well. The app looks like it was made for a computer screen on my phone. It is very big and some of the words are cut off and you can’t see them very well, the app does sometimes crash, but besides for that, it’s very good. developers if you could please improve these things that I mentioned app sometimes crashes and font is cut off by screen.

This would be great if it worked better. Problem is, it makes all sorts of bad recognition errors that are very difficult to correct. It wastes more time than it saves, just to fix the errors. There should be a way to edit the score easily like with cut copy and paste, replace, etc., so that writing recognition errors can be quickly corrected. Instead I often find the need to erase a whole bunch of stuff and redo it. Some stuff cannot be corrected practically. In summary, the concept is great, especially with the Apple Pencil. The problem is, recognition is terrible, even when it should be plainly clear.
