User Reviews

Reviews consistently praise Symphony Pro for strong handwriting recognition, a flexible multi-line display, good value, and a practical workflow that supports exporting/importing to formats like XML for use with other apps. However, repeatedly cited drawbacks include bugs and glitches that break work, a difficult, non-intuitive UI with limited help, and slow or unreliable developer support and communication. Update nags and forum availability add frustration, and cloud backup options are unreliable, raising concerns about data safety. Overall, the app shows potential and value but struggles with stability and support.
Pros
  • Handwriting recognition is praised as superior to StaffPad—smooth, fast, and reliable.
  • Multi-line/page display improves readability and workflow, unlike some rivals that show only one line per page.
  • Strong value for money with a capable feature set, especially when compared to more expensive notation apps.
  • Flexible workflow for jotting ideas and exporting/importing formats (e.g., XML for Finale) for use with other apps.
Cons
  • Frequent bugs and glitches that disrupt work, including unexpected UI behavior and parts disappearing.
  • Not intuitive or easy to learn; steep learning curve and insufficient or unclear help/manual.
  • Slow developer response and support issues, offline forums, and persistent update prompts.
  • Unreliable backups/cloud sync (iCloud backup not working) and risk of losing scores, with limited recovery options.
Recent reviews
I just recently bought the app and when I am using it the app crashes and tells me to update but when I try it says it’s up to date. Plus the app is buggy and can’t accurately read handwritten notes even though I had to paid extra for that feature. If these issues get fixed I’ll use it because the ui is pretty decently designed and the non-handwritten parts are pretty good but I bought the app for the handwritten notation

The SP app persistently nags upon startup that an update is available. No such update is found via the Apple update utility. The SP forum website is offline. No listed direct email to the developers. Have invested a lot of time and effort in creating scores, but am on the verge of mass-exporting all my scores in mxml format and shifting to another app. Very disappointing.
