Staventabs: Compose & Notate Apple

Staventabs: Compose & Notate

Score and tablature editor

Features & Capabilities

Staventabs: Compose & Notate is a comprehensive iOS notation and tablature editor that helps musicians create, edit, and share scores. Start from templates, enter notes with an instrument-independent interface or a virtual piano keyboard, and refine your work with a piano roll and drums editor. Choose from 22 instrument groups, add lyrics, and customize clefs, keys, time signatures, dynamics, tunings, and voices. Auto-saving keeps your scores safe, and MIDI device support lets you connect external gear for playback and recording.

Beyond editing, Staventabs provides powerful practice and project management: playback of full scores or fragments, adjustable metronome, and on-the-fly audio properties. It also includes AI-assisted features like highlighted issues and starred scales, supports importing/exporting formats such as SNT, MIDI, MusicXML, GPX/GP5/GP4/GP3, and KAR, and syncs with iCloud Drive for cross-device access. Upgrades unlock unlimited projects, additional instruments, and advanced composing tools.

User Reviews

Overall, users praise Staventabs for its powerful, DAW-like notation and GP/MIDI compatibility, plus its guitar/drums focus and value. But reliability concerns dominate: stability issues, data loss after updates, limited free tier, and ongoing paywalls for features. Some users report printing/sharing gaps and playback/latency quirks. The app is liked by pros who are willing to invest in upgrades, and many express confidence the developers are responsive and active, though these issues persist for many.
Pros
  • Broad format support and compatibility, including import/export with Guitar Pro (GP) files and MIDI, plus multi-format outputs.
  • Feature-rich, DAW-like workflow with both piano roll and staff notation, multi-track playback, and flexible input options.
  • Good value for money with affordable upgrades and a clear distinction between free and paid features.
  • Intuitive interface after a learning curve, with users noting it becomes rewarding as you learn.
  • Strong instrument focus (especially for guitarists and drummers) and solid instrument sounds.
Cons
  • Stability and data reliability concerns: crashes, lost progress, and unreliable autosave/history across updates.
  • Free tier is limited and the reliance on in-app purchases for key features frustrates some users.
  • File/format compatibility issues after updates, including GP/MIDI import/export problems and updates breaking existing GP files.
  • Printing/sharing and some export workflows are constrained or require purchases, limiting quick distribution of work.
  • Playback/latency quirks and synchronization issues (e.g., loop timing, MIDI input latency, and playback alignment).

I really like this app. It has a bit of a learning curve, but the more I learn how to use it, the more I appreciate it as a music tool. Unfortunately the app seems to eat through my battery fairly quickly and my iPad gets pretty hot, even when I'm not moving anything and it is just sitting idle. Could be something caused by screen brightness, though. I heard a dark mode might be coming at some point, which could help with this. I totally recommend the app and the provided in app purchases.

I’m a paid user. This app is a nightmare. I just lost 80% of my progress on a music score I spent hours on. I even tried to manually "Export to File" several times during the process, but the exported files only contained old data from nearly an hour ago. The app claims to save, but it doesn't. There is absolutely no reliable backup system or history recovery. If you value your time and your music, STAY AWAY. This is the most unstable notation app I've ever used.

Hey there. I really like the app, I'm a trombone player. But, this is the only thing that matters. Make trombone free please. The other composing apps are hard to use, and I've been wasting 20% of my storage just to look at apps, and so far, this app looks cool. Please make trombone free and I will rate this app a 4 or 5, and I will be able to use this app. Thank you!
