Features & Capabilities

BirdsEye Texas OS is a FREE birding tool from the Texas Ornithological Society that helps you find birds around Texas. It displays recent sightings near your location or at thousands of hotspots worldwide, shows seasonality with bar charts, highlights birds recently reported that aren’t on your lists, and can automatically sync your life or year lists with eBird. The app also includes multiple language names for many species and rich photos to help with field marks.

It’s not a field guide but a discovery aid to see what birds are being seen nearby and across Texas. A free BirdsEye account backs up and syncs lists across devices; a premium BirdsEye Membership unlocks more media, broader Notable searches, extended distance ranges, and unlimited favorite locations. The app uses GPS for on‑the‑spot sightings, works on iPhone and iPad, and can import eBird lists for global, national, state, or county use. Auto-renew is available via iTunes.

User Reviews

Users praise BirdsEye Texas OS for strong eBird integration, rich Texas-specific data, and helpful planning/tracking features. It supports year/lifelist tracking, nearby bird discovery, and offers fast loading with free unlimited access. However, several reviews report sign-up and login problems and occasional startup or login-loop reliability issues, which can hamper usage. Overall, it’s powerful for local Texas birders when it runs smoothly, but reliability improvements are needed.
Pros
  • Strong integration with eBird, including syncing of lists.
  • Extensive Texas-focused data with hotspots, CBC circles, photos, audio, and alerts.
  • Great tools for year/lifelist tracking and discovering nearby birds while traveling.
  • Fast loading and free unlimited access compared with alternatives (no paywall for nearby species).
Cons
  • Sign-up and login issues: sign-up may fail, password resets can say the account exists or don’t work.
  • App reliability problems: occasional startup failures or loops back to the login screen, hindering use.

I wish I had explored the full function of the updated app more recently. Amazing tool for finding nearby records of species you need for a year or life list. Highly recommended for local listers!

I use this app often to track birds I haven't seen for the year in whatever area I happen to be in at any given time. Great app for keeping track of birds.
