User Reviews

Users laud Audubon Bird Guide for strong, flexible ID tools, easy logging with eBird integration, and beginner-friendly design, plus Merlin compatibility and rich media. Recurrent downsides are login/privacy issues, bugs/UI instability, limited geographic coverage, and occasional location inaccuracies. Overall, a powerful tool for many birders, especially beginners, but stability and global scope improvements are needed.
Pros
  • Powerful bird identification features with filters (including call-based search) and thorough species info.
  • Easy to log sightings with built-in eBird integration, location-based spot suggestions, and customizable lists/notifications.
  • User-friendly, clean design that works well for beginners and remains versatile for experienced birders.
  • Works well with Merlin, enhancing the ID workflow.
  • Rich media and explore options (photo feed) plus customization options for tracking and sharing sightings.
Cons
  • Login/authentication problems and privacy concerns about forced tracking or communications, with multiple reports of login failures.
  • Bugs and UI issues (crashes, texture/icon misalignment, layout problems) affecting usability.
  • Limited geographic coverage (primarily North America) and requests for more global bird species regions (e.g., Europe, Hawaii).
  • Occasional location inaccuracies (sighting locations not reliable) and other feature reliability concerns.

I downloaded this app a couple years ago and haven’t been using it that much until recently and it’s amazing at finding the birds that I’m seeing in my front yard here. It’s a really good Wildlife area. And believe it or not I live in the city. I love that there are several different pictures of both male female species as well as several different voice recordings that each bird produces. It’s a great tool and I love it. The calls are clear.

I log all my bird sightings in Audubon. However, version 8.5.2 and the version before it brought instabilities. A letter ‘r’ in Search brings an error, but letter ’h’ does not. Merlin IDs a song as Western Flycatcher but Audubon doesn’t list such a bird.

This app is the best birdwatching app. You can download offline content and it also includes maps, sounds and pictures. It has so many bird species and you can organize them alphabetically or by family. You can also sign petitions for bird conservation and log bird sightings. Also, this app is completely free and accessible. There is a bug where it keeps saying "Retry" if you try to download offline content. Other than that, wonderful app. Great for tablets and smartphones alike. Doesn't take up much storage space either. Thank you, National Audubon Society for making one of the most great apps I have downloaded.
