User Reviews

Sibley Birds 2nd Edition is praised for ease of use, strong visuals, and field-guide utility with rich identification details. However, recurring concerns include outdated taxonomy, missing new species, unreliable sound playback in certain modes, and several UI/stability issues after updates, including iOS 17 compatibility and split-screen limitations.
Pros
  • Easy to use and navigate with quick search for identifying birds.
  • High-quality photos/illustrations; visually appealing and helpful for identification.
  • Replaces a paper field guide; portable reference for on-the-go birding.
  • Rich, taxonomically organized information with tips to distinguish similar species.
Cons
  • Content is not updated regularly; taxonomy changes and new species are missing (e.g., splits and newly established species).
  • Bird song playback issues; sounds may not work or won't play in silent mode after updates.
  • UI/UX/navigation limitations; panels within panels and limited split-screen/search capabilities on some devices.
  • Stability/compatibility problems after updates (glitches, crashes, iOS 17 compatibility) and occasional performance issues.

I love this app and use it constantly. I just wish they would update the range maps. Many are out of date and often the southern portion of the map is not visible, so you can’t see the winter range. If it was a free app I wouldn’t complain.

This is the best bird guide for North America out there, but it doesn't get updated frequently enough. It's been a year since the Warbling Vireo was split into two species and the app hasn't changed yet. There are also a few exotic species that have recently become established that the book does not include, most notably Burrowing Parakeet. A lot of the parrot information in general is outdated as well. And finally, Long-billed and Short-billed Dowitchers could use finer details and maybe some closeups of how the scapular feather patterns differ.
