You choose who you are up against, you say your piece, and they push back. It works in text. It also works as a phone call, which is harder, and worth doing at least once before the day itself.

Three ways in Pick a situation from the library, which is the low-effort start: work that keeps arriving late, a boundary that has stopped holding, a refusal you keep softening, something you need to hand over. Or pick a type of person, if you already know the sort you come off worst against. Or set up a colleague you actually manage, which takes the longest and pays back the most. Whichever you choose, you set how much resistance you want first.

They do not just agree Your counterpart has their own account of what happened and believes it is the correct one. They will not accept the first way you phrase things. The speech you rehearsed in the car does not tend to survive contact.

Afterwards The debrief is built out of your own sentences and quotes them back at you. It says which line did the work, and which one you hedged until it stopped meaning anything. Any moment in the conversation can be reopened and taken again.

The people you actually manage Add a colleague, keep a few notes and a timeline on them, and rehearse before the review or the one-to-one you have now moved twice. You rate how ready you feel out of five before and after. That gap is the only number here worth looking at.

Reading and talks Other people's, not ours. On the parts of the job nobody trains you for: having hard conversations, the ones you keep avoiding, managing your old team, making one-to-ones count, letting go of work.

What leaves the phone Your notes on a colleague, their timeline and every rehearsal you have done stay on the device. Nothing is recorded. Speech becomes text on the phone and only the text is sent, so that something can answer it. No account is needed to use any of this. You need one to subscribe, and to get a subscription back on a new handset.
