Heart Rate & Weekly Zone Goals
Zone 2 Coach tracks your weekly Zone 2 cardio minutes automatically from Apple Watch — no account, no "start workout" tap required. Set your weekly target, watch your ring fill, and get honest coaching on whether you're actually building the aerobic base that matters.
Zone 2 is the training intensity where your body preferentially burns fat, builds mitochondrial density, and strengthens the aerobic machinery that underlies almost every health marker worth tracking — metabolic health, fat oxidation efficiency, VO2 max, cardiovascular resilience, and longevity. It's not glamorous. It's also not negotiable if you want the adaptations that compound over years, not weeks.
The problem: most people either skip Zone 2 entirely or can't tell whether their casual walks and easy rides actually count. Zone 2 Coach solves that by reading your heart rate continuously from Apple Watch and crediting every qualifying minute — whether you're on a treadmill, cycling, hiking, or walking the dog.
HOW IT WORKS
Zone 2 Coach runs passively in the background. It reads heart rate data from HealthKit throughout the day and identifies every minute your heart rate falls within your personal Zone 2 range. You don't tap "Start." You don't remember to log. You just move, and the app keeps score.
Your weekly goal shows as a ring on the home screen. Daily bars break down each day's contribution so you can see your pattern — whether you front-load the week, cram it into the weekend, or spread it out evenly. All of it counts.
RIGHT NOW
The Right Now screen shows your live heart rate and tells you — in plain language — whether you're in Zone 2 right now, below it, or above it. If you're above Zone 2, it tells you to back off. If you're below, it tells you to pick it up. No guessing. No spreadsheet.
COACHING
Zone 2 Coach delivers short, direct coaching messages based on your actual week. If you hit your goal, it tells you. If you're behind on Tuesday and it's Thursday, it tells you that too, and what you'd need to do to close the gap.
ZONE 2 FORMULA
The app defaults to a percentage-of-max-heart-rate formula that works for most people. Pro users can switch to the Maffetone method (180 minus age, with adjustments) or enter a custom range from a lactate test or VO2 max assessment.
ZONE 2 PRO
• Multi-week trend chart showing weekly Zone 2 minutes over time
• Advanced Zone 2 formula options (Maffetone, custom BPM range)
• Home screen widgets — glanceable weekly ring without opening the app
• Apple Watch complication — minute count on your watch face
Zone 2 Coach does not require an account. It does not require a subscription to start using it. All processing happens on your device. Works with Apple Watch Series 4 and later, running watchOS 10 or newer.
If you're training for longevity, following Peter Attia's Zone 2 protocol, implementing Andrew Huberman's aerobic base recommendations, or just trying to build a sustainable cardio habit, Zone 2 Coach gives you the one number that matters each week: did you get your minutes?
