Features & Capabilities

VerbTeX LaTeX Editor is a free LaTeX editor for iOS that lets you create and manage LaTeX projects with both offline (Local) and cloud (Verbosus) modes. It supports PdfLaTeX, XeLaTeX, and LuaLaTeX, BibTeX/Biber, and project synchronization via Dropbox, Box, and iCloud, with optional Git and Zotero/Mendeley integrations in Local Mode.

Key productivity features include syntax highlighting, line numbers, autosave, hotkeys, file uploads, and inverse search from PDF to .tex. In VerbTeX Pro you get code completion and unlimited projects; the free version has limits on projects and uploads. Cloud mode also supports two-factor authentication for extra security and a no-ads experience.

User Reviews

VerbTeX on iOS is praised for being easy to use, lightweight, fast at producing PDFs, and for built-in LaTeX macros. It’s free and workable on iPhone/iPad for quick notes and math writing. However, reviewers repeatedly note major drawbacks: offline compilation is limited and relies on web access; cloud sync is restricted to Dropbox/Box with no smooth iCloud or Files support; readability suffers from small fonts unless adjusted; the LaTeX log is hard to read (BibTeX log shown); and package support plus in-app documentation are limited. Overall it’s solid for simple tasks but needs work for larger projects.
Pros
  • Easy to use with a clean interface
  • Lightweight app with fast editing and syntax highlighting
  • Built-in LaTeX macros and packages (e.g., amsmath, amsthm)
  • Free to use
  • Exports to PDF and works well on iPad/iPhone
Cons
  • Offline compilation is limited and largely requires internet/web access
  • Cloud/storage relies on Dropbox/Box with no smooth iCloud/Files integration; managing files locally is awkward
  • Readability can be poor due to small font size/low contrast (limited in-app font controls)
  • LaTeX log access is not helpful (appears to show BibTeX log instead of LaTeX log)
  • Package availability and in-app documentation are limited (some packages not supported; limited built-in help)
