User Reviews

iBird Yard+ is praised for its extensive photos and bird calls, user-friendly design, and strong backyard-birding usefulness. Users value its educational aspects and free features. Recurrent drawbacks are regional gaps in species coverage and occasional technical issues after updates, including sound problems and search mismatches. Overall, it’s a solid field guide with great identifying tools, tempered by coverage and reliability improvements.
Pros
  • Large, comprehensive database with high-quality photos and bird calls for reliable identification
  • Very user-friendly and easy to navigate, suitable for beginners and experienced birders alike
  • Strong support for backyard birding (identifying birds at feeders) with useful features like filters, favorites, and audio
  • Educational and discovery-oriented, helping users learn about new species and fostering conservation interest
  • Long-standing, well-regarded tool with notable value and free features among users
Cons
  • Regional coverage gaps: missing common backyard birds in some areas (e.g., certain quail and local species) and uneven species availability across regions
  • Occasional post-update technical issues: sound not working on newer devices (e.g., iPhone X) and intermittent search/match problems like 'no match' results
  • Content/update delays for local species: some users feel the app isn’t fully up-to-date for their area, leading to missing or misrepresented regional birds

I’m in awe at the power of this app! The updates since iPhone One are reflective of a database that’s never going to go out of style! The importance in the fields of conservation and film of databases like these are a good investment.

Really? You would think something as common as a quail would be in this app but no, it is not. This is the second or third time I have been greatly disappointed. I live at a lake where there are many species of birds but am still looking for the name of one of the birds I see only occasionally.

…as a kid fishing and hunting in marsh areas in Southern California, there was a bird that had a distinctive call and was always hidden. I always wondered what it looked like, well this app was suggested to try and, guess what, I listened to the various calls provided in the app, I finally was able to see the mysterious bird. Yippee!!!
