User Reviews

iBird Pro is praised for its depth, offline usability, and rich visuals, making it a powerful field guide. However, a major recurring downside is the shift to a subscription model with access and support issues, along with mixed feelings about the AI features.
Pros
  • Comprehensive all-in-one field guide with range maps, songs, calls, similar species, and habit details; many reviewers say it's more informative and worth the price than traditional field guides.
  • Easy to use and highly searchable, with offline access for travel and field work.
  • Excellent audio-visual content: high-quality bird photos/artwork, clear recordings, and an engaging slide show; Flickr photo integration enhances identification.
  • Helpful learning/organization features: iBirdGPT integration, ability to sort by family, 'Birds around me' filtering, and easy access to favorites and photos.
  • Strong value and reliability for a mobile field guide; packed with features in one app, supporting both beginners and experienced birders.
Cons
  • Recurring subscription model issues: shift from a one-time purchase to a subscription, loss of lifetime access, unclear pricing, and ongoing costs that frustrate many users.
  • Subscription restoration/support problems: difficulty restoring purchases and delays or lack of response from support.
  • Mixed reception to AI features: iBirdGPT garners both praise and complaints; some users want the option to disable it.

Living in a rural area means cell service isn't always available. I like that I can still access bird information and sounds when I'm out exploring. Very dependable app.

A few years ago I purchased the lifetime version of the iBird Pro app. Loved the app. Then low and behold one day opened the app and it tells me I need a subscription. Contacted the developer and the response was “we have gone to a different model now that requires a monthly or yearly subscription.” So I have to pay twice? Is this legal? Needless to say I deleted the app. Now I see iBird is offering a lifetime subscription again. Probably won’t purchase due to the past experience. My opinion is they played dirty pool.

As someone who collects field guides, I love having this available when carrying a book isn’t convenient. It’s helped me identify birds by both sight and sound and it's fun just scrolling through the birds in my area with the birds around me feature.
