User Reviews

Reviews overall praise Mona Classic for its fast, polished, customizable interface and a one-time, multi-device purchase, plus privacy-friendly defaults and good compatibility with Mastodon-like servers. But many critics accuse the developer of monetization abuses (shifting lifetime users to Mona Classic and gating core features behind paywalls), show concerns about abandonment as bugs go unfixed, and describe stability issues like UI lockups and unreliable reply loading. Blocking/muting features are also reported as unreliable or limited, contributing to a perception that essential functionality requires ongoing payments. This tension defines the current sentiment.
Pros
  • Highly customizable and polished UI with fast, smooth performance.
  • One-time payment with a multi-device license and no ongoing subscription for basic use.
  • Privacy-focused with no tracking and minimal data collection.
  • Good cross-server compatibility, including Pleroma support, enabling flexible Mastodon-like usage.
Cons
  • Monetization concerns: lifetime users moved to Mona Classic and charged again for updates; paywalls for core features.
  • Perceived abandonment: developer pivot to Mona 7 and ongoing bugs are not addressed; risk of rental/subscription model.
  • Stability issues: UI lockups and random crashes; unreliable reply loading at times.
  • Blocking/muting features unreliable or limited; app-local notes; inconsistent behavior across servers.
  • Core interactions (like, boost, etc.) often gated behind paid tiers, making basic use feel paywalled.
Recent reviews
Developer decided to retire this app after selling a lifetime subscription offering. Very upset.

Delete and reinstall fails in same way. Likewise on iPad and macOS, even with iCloud sync settings off. Coincidence? Call me skeptical given that paid users are being forced to pay again for version 7. Fool me twice? This user will find an alternative instead. Sad; I liked Mona and was an early paid user but this reeks of sleaze
