Features & Capabilities

FreeCBT is an open-source thought diary for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). It guides you through recording automatic thoughts, challenging cognitive distortions, and applying the three-column technique to reframe moods and behaviors. CBT is a well-supported approach for depression, anxiety, and panic, and FreeCBT provides a lightweight, self-help tool in that tradition. FreeCBT, a fork of Quirk, is released under the GPL. Code is available on GitHub at https://github.com/erosson/freecbt.

As a Chrome extension, FreeCBT acts as a portable companion for ongoing practice. It combines simplicity, openness, and community-driven development to support users in daily self-monitoring and mood improvement.

User Reviews

FreeCBT is widely praised as a free, ad-free, easy-to-use tool that supports on-demand CBT journaling and thought challenging. Users appreciate the simple UI and lack of charges for daily practice and therapy support. However, reviews note missing depth in CBT content (evidence-for/against, worst-case scenarios) and request more features (tagging, analytics, dark mode) and improved navigation. A few users report minor device-related usability issues, but overall it’s valued as a free, accessible resource with room for feature enhancements.
Pros
  • Free to use
  • Simple, intuitive, easy-to-use interface
  • Ad-free (no ads)
  • Helpful for CBT journaling and thought challenging on-demand
  • Supports on-demand CBT exercises/guidance and aids therapy continuation
Cons
  • CBT content depth is limited: lacks evidence-for/evidence-against lists and worst-case scenario guidance
  • Step-four examples are insufficient; users want more wide-ranging examples
  • Requests for more features and better navigation: tagging/categorization, bottom navigation, analytics, and a dark mode

I was looking for something CBT based that was somewhat guiding. This is that app. It helps me to understand my thoughts better and how they affect me. It’s also incredibly easy to help me look for a better challenging positive thought rather than just going negative.
