User Reviews

Across reviews, RedShelf is seen as unreliable and frustrating. The most persistent issues are a white screen that blocks access, frequent crashes, and a need to reinstall the app. Users report repeated login prompts and verification codes to open books, plus poor offline support and download errors. Highlighting and annotation features are often broken, and text formatting can be unreadable. Customer support is described as ineffective. A few reviewers call it 'OK' or note brief periods of function, but the overall consensus is that the app is troublesome for digital textbooks.
Pros
  • Occasional brief stability: a reviewer noted it 'worked great for two days' before issues returned.
  • Mild acceptance: at least one reviewer called it an 'OK app'.
  • Designed to function as the digital textbook reader for school assignments.
Cons
  • Persistent white screen/blank page that blocks access to books and often requires reinstall.
  • Frequent crashes and instability; books won't load or the app force closes.
  • Offline/download issues: cannot reliably download for offline use; errors about 'already downloaded' and other download failures.
  • Repeated login/verification prompts to access books (email codes / sign-in required multiple times).
  • Highlighting/annotation and text formatting issues; highlighting is erratic and text can be unreadable.
Recent reviews
Like all half-baked e-readers that work with universities, this company provides half of the features for usability than any free option would have. It also has the wonderful habit of deciding that you are logged in multiple times, and will tell you that you can’t access the textbook you spent several hundred dollars to read. Unless your school forces you towards this money grubbing pit, avoid RedShelf. It’s as difficult to use and restrictive as you can imagine.

There has been half a dozen times that I’ve needed material and it wouldn’t open. I wish I had spent the money on books instead of this. At least I could reference them! The password reset is garbage, and downloading for offline, same!
