Facebook Container

By: Firefox
Prevent Facebook from tracking you around the web. The Facebook Container extension for Firefox helps you take control and isolate your web activity from Facebook.

Features & Capabilities

Facebook Container is a Firefox extension designed to protect your privacy by isolating your Facebook identity into a separate browser container. This prevents Facebook from tracking your visits to other websites using third-party cookies. Once installed, it logs you out of Facebook and deletes Facebook cookies before loading Facebook in a distinct "Container" tab, allowing you to browse other sites without Facebook tracking your activity.

The extension disables embedded Facebook features like Comments and Like buttons outside the container, limiting data sharing. While it doesn't prevent Facebook from accessing your data on its platform, it offers a robust tool to minimize tracking across the web. Facebook Container leverages Firefox's built-in Containers feature and works best alongside the Multi-Account Containers extension. It supports Firefox desktop versions 57 and above but is not compatible with other browsers or Firefox mobile.

User Reviews

Reviewers largely praise Facebook Container for its protection against Facebook tracking and for cookie isolation, framing it as an essential privacy tool. However, reliability is a repeated complaint, with multiple reports that the extension stops working. Some sites require manual whitelisting, and there are occasional cookie-related issues that disrupt normal site behavior. Users also note it can interact with other privacy tools and configurations. Overall, it’s valued for privacy, but improvements in stability and user-friendly configuration are frequently requested.
Pros
  • Provides strong privacy protection by blocking Facebook tracking and preventing cross-site profiling.
  • Isolates cookies to limit cross-site data leakage.
  • Widely regarded as an essential privacy tool by privacy-conscious users.
  • Can be used in combination with other privacy containers and supports advanced configurations.
Cons
  • Unreliable or non-functional for some users, with reports of it stopping to work.
  • Messes with cookies and can break site functionality.
  • Requires manual whitelisting for certain sites (e.g., Threads) to work properly.

It helps to prevent Facebook's tracking (doesn't stop, but helps stop), but it is missing a lot of Facebook URLs. It only has 3 of Facebook's URLs built in, but it is missing the URLs for threads, meta AI, whatsapp, all of the FB help and company pages, and their other projects. There is actually an issue and pull request open for this on their GitHub, but Mozilla seems to be ignoring it, and because of that, I have to take off major points, since they know about it, and someone is fixing it for them, but they still aren't doing anything about it, which is unfortunate.

I've tried several alternatives and this one is by far the best. Straightforward and does the job perfectly.
