Google Container Firefox

Google Container

THIS IS NOT AN OFFICIAL ADDON FROM MOZILLA! It is a fork of the Facebook Container addon. Prevent Google from tracking you around the web. The Google Container extension helps you take control and isolate your web activity from Google.

Features & Capabilities

Google Container is a privacy-focused browser extension designed to prevent Google from tracking your browsing activity on other websites. By isolating your Google identity in a separate colored container tab, it makes it harder for Google to use third-party cookies to follow your web visits beyond its own services.

Upon installation, the extension clears your Google cookies and logs you out. When you visit Google, it opens in its own container tab where you can log in and use Google normally. External websites load outside this tab, stopping Google from associating your browsing data with your Google account. Although it limits Google's cross-site tracking, it does not protect against data Google already possesses. For enhanced privacy, using this extension alongside other tools like Firefox Multi-Account Containers, Private Browsing, and tracker blockers is recommended.

Note: This extension is a fork of the Facebook Container addon and is not officially affiliated with Mozilla. It leverages Firefox's native container functionality to segregate browsing sessions for greater user control over privacy.

User Reviews

Users praise Google Container for automatic operation and its usefulness as an essential, container-like solution. However, multiple reviews report recurring issues: sign-in across sites is broken, YouTube/Google services fail to load or keep reloading, and navigation/history (back button and tab history) is disrupted. A few also note reliability concerns, suggesting maintenance or abandonment.
Pros
  • Automatically works with minimal setup and saves time by handling Google domain isolation.
  • Considered essential/critical by several users for a Firefox install.
  • Conceptually useful, similar to Facebook Container, offering Google service isolation.
Cons
  • Breaks Google sign-in across sites or logs you out of Google accounts.
  • Causes YouTube and other Google services to fail or reload endlessly.
  • Interferes with browser navigation/back history when using Google pages.

Keeps Removing Itself From my Add-ons and Logging Me Out Until I Reinstall, have the page bookmarked and just live with it though, it's not the worst thing ever

Just automatically works, without having to set anything up! Saves me from setting up a Google container and telling the Firefox Containers add-on to "Always open this in site in..." for every different Google domain, on every new PC I use. NB: I don't use Google to sign into anything, which is a big reason why this extension "just works" for me. If you use Google to sign into certain sites, this extension will cause you trouble, by design. --I use a password manager (BitWarden) to sign into all of my accounts (both so I don't have to be signed into Google everywhere, but also so I don't have to remember whether I signed up with Google/Facebook, which email, etc...)

Is Google Container Safe?

A low risk impact extension cannot do much harms, whereas a high risk impact extension can do a lot of damage like stealing your password, bypassing your security settings, and accessing your personal data. High risk impact extensions are not necessarily malicious. However, if they do turn malicious, they can be very harmful.

Google Container requires some sensitive permissions that could impact your browser and data security. Exercise caution before installing.
