YouTube No Buffer (No Autoplay) Extension

This Chrome extension prevents YouTube's HTML5 and Flash players from automatically buffering and autoplaying videos. It is especially useful for saving bandwidth and avoiding simultaneous buffering when multiple YouTube tabs are open. You control when a video buffers by clicking the player, allowing efficient management of media playback.

Key Features:

  • Stops auto-playing on YouTube watch, user, and channel pages
  • Blocks auto-buffering on embedded YouTube players
  • Supports YouTube's modern Material Design
  • Compatible with popular ad-blockers

This lightweight and stable WebExtension prioritizes user control and bandwidth efficiency without interfering with playlist playback. For additional YouTube customization, consider exploring related tools like "YouTube Stop AutoPlay Next" or "YouTube no Annotations."

User reviews

Users appreciate that the add-on effectively stops YouTube videos from auto-playing or buffering unnecessarily, especially when opening multiple tabs or combined with other extensions. However, several issues persist, such as incomplete buffering prevention, bugs causing hidden video playback, failures with certain video types like clips or content warnings, UI interference including blocked info and disabled controls, and occasional difficulties posting comments. Despite these shortcomings, users find the add-on useful for controlling YouTube playback and reducing data consumption.
Pros
  • Effectively prevents YouTube videos from auto-playing and auto-buffering, improving control over video playback.
  • Works well in combination with other extensions like adblockers and theater mode enhancers.
  • Helps reduce data usage and improve page load performance by stopping unnecessary buffering.
  • Improves user experience when opening many YouTube tabs by preventing multiple videos from playing simultaneously.
Cons
  • Does not fully stop all buffering; some buffering still occurs despite settings.
  • Has bugs causing unintended playback of hidden videos on channel pages and video listings.
  • Fails to work properly with clips, videos with content warnings, or when YouTube URLs contain starting times, sometimes causing page reloads or blocking playback.
  • Interferes with YouTube UI elements, blocking information display, disabling controls, and sometimes preventing posting comments.
Recent reviews
Needs to be updated. Assuming you use uBlock Origin to remove the ads before the video, or find a video with no ads, the addon will stop the video but you can see in the timeline it didn't stop some buffering from happening. Doesn't matter what options you select some buffering will happen. Please fix
