swipe-back

Go back to previous page by swiping left with two fingers on a trackpad.

The Swipe-Back Chrome extension enables users to navigate backward in their browser history by simply swiping left with two fingers on a trackpad. This feature emulates the native swipe-back gesture commonly found on Mac Magic Trackpads, enhancing user experience for those on other platforms. With this extension, browsing becomes smoother and more intuitive without relying on keyboard shortcuts or mouse clicks. Note: If you are using a Mac computer, this extension is unnecessary as the gesture is already supported natively.

User reviews

Swipe-back is praised for enabling two-finger swipe navigation on Chromium-based browsers under Linux, filling a gap where native support is missing. It works well across various Linux distros and devices, including Fedora and Ubuntu, and is appreciated by Vivaldi and Opera users. However, issues such as lack of forward swipe support, inconsistent functionality in certain browsers (e.g. Brave), large gesture size requirements, and the need to refresh pages after installation have been reported. Overall, it is a valuable but imperfect solution for swipe navigation on Linux browsers.
Pros
  • Provides a browser-based swipe navigation solution on Linux, especially for Chromium-based browsers.
  • Enables two-finger lateral swipe gestures for back and occasionally forward navigation, improving user experience.
  • Works well on multiple Linux distributions and devices such as Fedora, Ubuntu, OpenSuse, ThinkPad, Dell XPS, and Chromebook.
  • Offers a minimal and effective way to enable swipe gestures where native support is lacking.
  • Highly appreciated by users of browsers like Vivaldi and Opera for enabling swipe navigation functionality.
Cons
  • Swipe forward functionality is either missing or limited, noted by several users.
  • Does not work consistently across all browsers and distributions, e.g., issues with Brave on Ubuntu and initial use on Opera requiring page refresh.
  • Requires large swipe gestures to activate, which users find inconvenient and lacking customization options.
  • In some cases, the extension only activates after refreshing the page post-installation.
  • Navigating forward from the new tab menu does not function properly in some browsers like Vivaldi.

not working in brave (ubuntu)

It works flawlessly! After much troubleshooting on a rehabilitated 2014 MacBook Air on Ubuntu 24, I finally got Chromium-based browser Vivaldi & Chrome history two-finger lateral swiping back & forth working using swipe-back. Huzzah! Still not sure why Ubuntu with Wayland was only able to support history navigation with the two-finger side swipe touchpad gestures on Mozilla Firefox. swipe-back immediately solved the situation on Chromium-based browsers. Thank you very much!
