Location Guard Firefox

Location Guard

Hide your geographic location from websites. Report a fake location with the addition of random noise in order to protect your privacy. Per site settings with three configurable levels of accuracy or even the possibility to use a fixed location.

Features & Capabilities

Location Guard is a powerful Chrome extension designed to protect your geographic privacy online. Modern browsers typically share your precise location with websites for enhanced functionality, but this can risk your privacy. Location Guard combats this by reporting a carefully randomized fake location instead of your true coordinates.

You can choose from three customizable privacy levels that add varying degrees of random "noise" to your real location, balancing accuracy and privacy according to your needs. For greater control, these settings can be applied on a per-website basis, allowing precise location sharing for services like driving directions and broader privacy for others like weather forecasts. Alternatively, you can opt for a fixed fake location independent of your actual whereabouts, maximizing your privacy.

Please note this extension only obscures location obtained via the browser's geolocation API; your IP address might still reveal imprecise location data. Location Guard is a must-have extension for users seeking to enjoy location-based web features without compromising personal privacy.

User Reviews

Location Guard reliably changes the browser’s geolocation using a Fixed Location option for predictable testing. Many users report it works well with the fixed-location feature, and there’s FAQ documentation to help use it. However, the add-on’s UI is clunky and hard to configure—settings can be hidden, multi-step, or not pinnable to the toolbar, with options sometimes disappearing or the icon greying out. It does not spoof the IP address, only the browser location, and some users experience non-functionality or regressions.
Pros
  • Fixed Location option to override browser geolocation and set a precise location.
  • Generally functional and works well for many users.
  • FAQ/documentation available to help understand usage.
Cons
  • UI/UX is clunky and difficult to configure; settings can be hidden, multi-step, not pinnable to the toolbar, and options may disappear or the icon may grey out.
  • It only changes browser geolocation, not the IP address, limiting privacy impact.
  • Some users experience non-functionality or regressions (e.g., icon greying out, missing options, or overall non-working).

I haven't figured out how it works yet (but I understand that you need to select a location on the map), but I've already found a bug: When I scroll, a menu appears that I don't intend to open.

Works exactly as expected. The options are available from the list of extensions (Ctrl+Shift+A), Location Guard, three-dot-menu, Options. If it doesn't work for you on a specific page, that's because the page doesn't rely on the information provided by the browser, but instead checks your IP (or that of your VPN etc) and a few other location sources more aggressively than other pages. There's nothing this (or any other) extension can do about that.
