IDND

IDND pops up a warning message whenever the domain of the site you are visiting contains a suspicious mix of characters from different language scripts.

IDN's are great for linguistic diversity but can be used for phishing or spoofing, so with IDND, suspicious IDN's cause an alert box to appear, warning you to take care. (This is in no way sufficient protection against all kinds of spoofing, but does add to your browser's defences.)

In addition, you can right click the URL address in the Firefox navigation bar and select IDN to get more information on the domain name (whether/where the domain contains international characters).

Finally, some users may wish to right click the navigation bar itself, choose "customise..." and then drag the IDND icon to beside the URL address. This icon changes green/blue/red depending on the nature of the domain name, it tells you whether you are visiting a Traditional Domain Name (green TDN) or an International Domain Name (UN-blue IDN) or an IDN suspicious domain (red).

I love the idea, but the icon is not changing color on Firefox 66.0.3 and I can't find a place where to file a bug report.

Extension safety

Risk impact
Risk impact measures the level of extra permissions an extension has access to. A low risk impact extension cannot do much harms, whereas a high risk impact extension can do a lot of damage like stealing your password, bypassing your security settings, and accessing your personal data. High risk impact extensions are not necessarily malicious. However, if they do turn malicious, they can be very harmful.

IDND requires some sensitive permissions that could impact your browser and data security. Exercise caution before installing.

Risk impact analysis details
  • Critical Allows access to all websites, posing a significant security risk as it can monitor and modify data from any visited site.

Risk likelihood
Risk likelihood measures the probability that a Firefox add-on may turn malicious. This is determined by the publisher and the Firefox add-on reputation on Firefox Browser Add-ons, the amount of time the Firefox add-on has been around, and other signals about the Firefox add-on. Our algorithms are not perfect, and are subject to change as we discover new ways to detect malicious extensions. We recommend that you always exercise caution when installing a Firefox add-on.

IDND is probably trust-worthy. Prefer other publishers if available. Exercise caution when installing this add-on.
