Features & Capabilities

Bible Vocab+ is a simple and fun way to learn vocabulary from the Greek New Testament and the Hebrew Old Testament. It now includes two new textbooks: Merkle & Plummer, Beginning with New Testament Greek, and Pratico & Van Pelt, Basics of Biblical Hebrew (edition 3). You can select vocab lists from any Bible passage or from leading textbooks such as Fuller & Choi, Mounce, Seow, and more. The vocab items may occasionally appear in different forms than in the textbook. The app supports multiple Greek text sources and Open Scriptures glosses, with four Greek texts (SBL, Westcott-Hort, Tischendorf, Byzantine) and the Westminster Leningrad Codex for Hebrew.

Key features include Spaced Repetition to test yourself at set intervals, Reading Mode for verse-by-verse practice, and Slideshow Modes (Vocab, Parsing, Verses) to study how words appear in text. Greek Audio recorded by Dr. George Athas from Moore College using a restored Koine pronunciation can be tried for free for the 100 most frequent words, with more available via in-app purchase. Data sources include Dodson (Greek Lexicon), Mounce’s Greek-English Lexicon, and the Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew lexicon, with glosses from participating textbooks.

User Reviews

Users largely praise Bible Vocab+ for its strong vocabulary review features, cross-language resources, portability, and ability to study across the Bible with multiple lexicons and grammars. The main recurring drawbacks are missing Hebrew audio and an outdated Mounce Greek grammar (4th edition), which leaves gaps in vocabulary. Other common complaints include overly frequent review prompts and limitations on customization, such as the inability to add custom word lists or passages. Some users also note maintenance and cross-device issues, but many still consider it a valuable, high-quality study tool for Koine Greek and Biblical Hebrew.
Pros
  • Robust vocabulary review with effective spaced repetition and progress tracking.
  • Supports Hebrew and Greek with multiple lexicons/grammars and provides word explanations within texts.
  • Portable, on-the-go study that reduces the need for a physical textbook.
  • Ability to study across the entire Bible or specific books/verses, including full verses.
Cons
  • Hebrew audio missing.
  • Mounce grammar not updated to 4th edition; some words missing.
  • Review intervals are too frequent / not customizable.
  • Cannot add custom word lists or passages.

I really like the app and would love to give it 5 stars, BUT …. The Mounce Basics of Biblical Greek needs to be updated to 4th edition. This keeps me from using it for greek vocab and I have to use another app that I don’t like as much. I also would really appreciate the audio for Hebrew - this is what I’m having trouble with, without this it is almost impossible for me to learn the vocabulary. I really hope you can make these improvements!

This is a great app for learning biblical languages. I love that the app is not just vocab, but you can also read the text and bring up detailed explanations of the words. I do feel like it reviews words I’ve already learned too often, though. I don’t think mastery of vocabulary is as important as with spoken languages. I dislike that I have to review all the old words before I can learn a new one. I also wish it had Hebrew audio. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like it’s being actively maintained, so improvements are unlikely. Still worth paying for, though.
