Tai Chi, or Taiji, is short for Tai Chi Chuan, or Taijiquan, which translates from Chinese to “Grand Ultimate fist”. Tai Chi is an internal-style Chinese martial art that can be traced back to the Chen family, the Daoists at Wudang mountain, and ultimately to Shaolin Temple.

"The Harvard Medical School Guide to Tai Chi" says: "regular practice leads to more vigor and flexibility, better balance and mobility, and a sense of well-being…Tai Chi also has a beneficial impact on the health of the heart, bones, nerves and muscles, immune system, and the mind."

When practiced slowly for health purposes, Tai Chi is a type of Qigong. Qi-Gong means "energy-work". Qigong (chi kung) is the ancient art of building the body's Qi (energy) to a higher level and circulating it throughout the body for rejuvenation and health. Some Qigong is practiced sitting or standing still, while other Qigong can be a kind of moving meditation. This gentle Qigong exercise is a highly effective way to reduce stress, increase energy, enhance healing, and generally improve your quality of life.

Qigong increases the quantity of energy in the body and improves the quality of your circulation through energy pathways, known as meridians. Qigong is sometimes called "acupuncture without needles."

Similar to yoga, Qigong can stimulate the entire body deeply with low-impact movement and develop a stronger mind/body connection. The slow, relaxed movements are widely recognized for their health benefits, strengthening the internal organs, muscles, joints, spine, and bones, and developing abundant energy.

Qigong can be effective in helping people with insomnia, stress-related disorders, depression, back pain, arthritis, high blood pressure, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, bioelectric circulatory system, lymphatic system, and digestive system.

User Reviews

The Yang Tai Chi app is lauded for expert instruction, top-notch video quality, and convenient, study-at-your-own-pace access. However, it is hampered by a paywall-heavy model that many feel is unclear and expensive, with frequent payment/unlock issues and little free content to sample. Overall, the teaching quality is strong and valuable, but potential buyers may be deterred by the pricing structure and access problems.
Pros
  • High-quality instruction from a recognized master (Dr. Yang) with clear explanations of martial applications.
  • Excellent video quality and audio, with captions/subtitles that make the material easy to follow.
  • Very convenient and portable; practice anywhere on iPad/phone with potential for AirPlay to a TV.
  • Strong value relative to DVDs or in-person lessons; comprehensive content at a lower cost.
  • Teaching style feels like private lessons with structured, step-by-step guidance.
Cons
  • Pay-to-unlock model locks most videos behind expensive, unclear pricing upfront.
  • Payments and unlocks are frequently reported to fail, and getting help from the developer is unclear.
  • No usable free trial or meaningful free samples to evaluate the content before purchasing.
  • Per-video costs can feel excessive for beginners, with many essential lessons behind paywalls.

When you try to open the first locked video it asks you to pay to unlock all. I did on my iPhone, the application told me that the payment was successful BUT it did not unlock the videos. Is this a scam that needs to be reported?

I paid $10 to unlock all videos but only one unlocked. I can’t find a way to contact the developer

Repeatedly tried to pay for the app but the app doesn’t accept the payment and then a pop up that is clearly part of the app pops up and asks for all of your Apple passwords and login… concerning.
