Features & Capabilities

Pregnant Eating helps expectant moms navigate nutrition during pregnancy with an 8,500+ food database for quick safety checks and clear guidance. Its color-coded system makes it easy to decide what to eat at a glance.

Foods are color-coded: green means eat freely, yellow means eat with precautions, and red means avoid. Each entry includes a plain-language explanation of safety considerations. Developed by an expectant dad, the app welcomes user feedback and supports ongoing database improvements.

User Reviews

Users praise Pregnant Eating as a free, easy-to-use, comprehensive guide that helps expectant moms decide what to eat and provides peace of mind. Many find it a valuable resource for shopping and dining decisions during pregnancy. However, recurring concerns include misinformation about safe foods (notably raw fish and nitrates), usability and search limitations, a buggy barcode scanner, and a US-centric bias that hinders non-US users. Reliability and navigation improvements would broaden its usefulness.
Pros
  • Free to use and accessible without payment
  • Provides guidance on safe foods during pregnancy, giving peace of mind and reducing guesswork
  • Comprehensive, all-in-one database of foods useful for shopping, dining out, and meal planning
  • Helpful for first-time or unsure pregnancies and general decision-making about what to eat
  • Easy to use and convenient for everyday food decisions
Cons
  • Some safety guidance appears inaccurate or misleading (e.g., raw fish and nitrates) leading to trust concerns
  • Usability/search limitations (hard to find items, lack of categories, navigation quirks) and a noticeable US-centric bias
  • Technical issues with the barcode scanner (often shows a black screen)
  • Time-consuming to use and not always efficient in finding information
  • Content bias toward American foods/brands makes non-US food lookup difficult

I love this app and that it is free to mamma La who are expecting. I was so unsure of what to eat and I haven’t been to my OBGYN yet cause I’m only 6 weeks but this app has helped me find peace of mind to know I’m eating what’s right for my growing baby.

I was really excited about downloading this app. Upon examining some of the choices, I noticed that it gives a lot of misinformation about pregnancy eating. Most of the foods that are labeled “ safe” contain nitrites and nitrates that should not be consumed during pregnancy as it poses health risks to the fetus. Please update this information with fact based knowledge about pregnancy and healthy eating... very disappointing.

The barcode scanner just shows a black screen.
