Taoist Diary is a quiet reading app. One meditation arrives each morning — a short passage from the Taoist, Buddhist and Stoic traditions, with a line to carry into the day.

THE DAILY MEDITATION Three hundred and sixty-five mornings, each one built the same way: a title, a line from the source, a short reflection, and the name of the text it came from. Nothing to scroll through, nothing to catch up on. One day at a time.

THE SHELF Ten complete works, in public-domain translations, free to read:

THE TALES Fifty-eight parables, retold from named sources across eight traditions — Taoist, Buddhist, Chinese, Greek, Indian, Sufi, Stoic and Zen. One arrives each week. Every tale names the work it came from; none of them were invented for this app.

LISTENING Everything above can be heard as well as read: the daily meditation, nine of the ten books, and the tales, narrated. There is background music you can leave on underneath, or turn off.

Listening is the part that costs. Reading is not.

WHAT IS FREE, AND WHAT IS NOT Reading is free — the daily meditation and all ten books, always. Listening is a subscription: US$1.99 per month or US$19.99 per year, with seven days free before anything is charged.

Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase. The subscription renews automatically unless it is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period, and your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours of the end of that period. You can manage the subscription and turn off auto-renewal in your Apple Account settings after purchase.

YOUR ACCOUNT An account keeps your place in each book and carries your subscription between your phone and the web. You can delete it, and everything in it, from inside the app: Profile → Delete account.
