Seed Pattern Chaos is a navigation puzzle inside one of the most complex mathematical objects ever discovered.
A shape made of light fills the screen. Organic, crystalline, branching into smaller and smaller filaments without limit. This is a Julia set — a fractal defined by a single rule applied repeatedly: take any point, square it, add a constant, repeat. Whether a point stays bounded or escapes to infinity under this iteration determines whether it belongs to the set. The boundary between those two behaviours, where the iteration is most chaotic and most sensitive, is the shape on the screen.
Every Julia set is defined by one number: a complex number written as two coordinates. Change those coordinates by a fraction and the entire shape transforms. Move them slightly left and the filaments reconfigure. Move them slightly right and the body changes proportion. The same rule, an imperceptibly different input, a completely different fractal.
In the corner of the screen sits a small dark map — a thumbnail of the Mandelbrot set, the complete dictionary of all possible Julia sets. Every address on that map corresponds to a unique fractal. The player drags a glowing probe across it. The main display updates in real time, recomputing 6,400 pixels of fractal geometry at every position.
A dim gold ghost shows the target shape. The live fractal renders in teal. Where the two overlap, the screen glows bright gold. Where they diverge, the ghost and the overshoot show the gap in amber and teal. A match bar fills as the probe approaches the target. The player watches two fractals converge — the ghost shrinking, the gold spreading — until they are indistinguishable.
Eight levels across four difficulties. Easy targets sit in the quiet interior of the Mandelbrot set, where Julia sets are smooth and the probe is forgiving — a displacement of a tenth of a unit barely changes the shape. Hard and expert targets sit near the Mandelbrot boundary, where the mathematics of chaos applies: a displacement of two thousandths of a unit visibly transforms the entire fractal. The same mathematics that makes weather prediction impossible past two weeks makes the expert levels genuinely difficult.
The game teaches the geography of the Mandelbrot set through play. Players learn that smooth shapes live in the interior, intricate ones near the boundary, and fractal dust beyond it. They learn that the map is not a picture but a library — every point an address, every address a living shape.
