Features & Capabilities

Diagnostics, logging, and module coding for the first-gen MINI (R50/R52/R53) — with an OBDLink MX+ or CX. Body-module coding also requires an OBD pin 7 to 8 bridge.

r53obd is a diagnostics, logging, and coding app built specifically for the first-generation MINI Cooper — the R50 hatch, R52 convertible, and R53 Cooper S. These cars are too old for most modern diagnostic and coding apps, which start at the newer CAN-bus models. r53obd speaks their language.

CHOOSE YOUR ADAPTER • OBDLink MX+ (Bluetooth) or OBDLink CX (Bluetooth LE) — the full experience: diagnostics, active tests, and module coding. • Any generic Bluetooth LE adapter (Veepeak and similar) — perfect for the free diagnostics tier: live data, fault codes, and VIN. Module coding and active tests need a coding-capable adapter (MX+ or CX).

FREE • Live engine data — RPM, boost/MAP, coolant & intake temps, throttle, fuel trims, lambda, timing, knock, wheel speeds, and more • Read & clear fault codes — in plain English, with MINI-specific detail generic scanners miss • Emissions readiness monitors and VIN • CSV data logging — capture a drive or a full-throttle pull and export it • Guided cooling-fan test — pinpoint the classic first-gen fan/relay failure • Read a module's coding — see exactly how your car is configured before you change anything • Demo mode — explore the whole app with sample data, no adapter required

PRO (one-time unlock — no subscriptions, no per-car fees) • Module coding — enable and adjust body and comfort features the factory left off, each change backed up first and read back to verify it took (roll back anytime from Coding backups) • Active tests / actuator controls — relays, fuel pump, A/C clutch, cooling fan, injectors, and more, with safety gating and confirmations • Adaptation resets — clear learned fuel, idle, and knock adaptations after service or parts changes • Service routines — an ABS/DSC brake-bleed cycle, a service-interval (SIA) reset, and instrument-cluster self-tests (needle sweep and warning-lamp check)

Built for the enthusiasts and DIYers who want real numbers from the supercharged Cooper S and honest diagnostics across the whole first-gen range. Designed for iPhone and iPad.

REQUIRES a compatible adapter (sold separately). A generic Bluetooth LE adapter covers the free diagnostics tier; module coding and active tests need an OBDLink MX+ or CX. For lawful diagnostics and maintenance on a vehicle you own. Airbag/restraint coding is never touched.

User Reviews

The dev is very responsive to feedback and continues to add features and updates. Easy to navigate, easy to read and give excellent data. Plus you can code some features on and off. If you have an R53, you should have this app.

I don’t EVER write reviews, but this application, its usefulness, its design, its reliability, … It is rare to come across anything on the App Store that delivers on every aspect. Phenomenal.
