User Reviews

Users generally find the app easy to use and a useful tool for learning ASL and practicing with Deaf communities, with an initial free chapter. However, they repeatedly cite several downsides: a costly paid model after the early content, persistent bugs in evaluations that prevent progress, and concerns about Deaf representation since the app relies on hearing instructors. The combination of reliability issues and ethical considerations reduces overall satisfaction despite its accessibility and potential benefits.
Pros
  • Easy to use and portable for on-the-go learning.
  • Helpful for learning ASL and practicing, with opportunities to engage with Deaf communities.
  • Provides initial free content (first lesson/chapter) before subscription.
  • Offers clear visual demonstrations showing how to sign.
Cons
  • High cost / subscription model after the initial content.
  • Evaluation and progress bugs that block advancement (crashes, stuck on first chapter, cannot proceed).
  • Authenticity concerns: uses hearing teachers; Deaf community notes prefer Deaf teachers and raises representational issues.

I’ve been trying out new apps. This one has potential but needs a few changes. 1. The hands are too zoomed out especially on small phone type devices. 2. The questions in relation to some of the questions is very distracting. The switch between a 1 image question to a 2 image question is not an easy transition. I find the jump puts me in a mental pause that by the time I find my rhythm again half the timer is gone then if the sequence I need to decipher is more than a word or two I don’t get enough repeats to catch it as a newcomer. 3. That brings me to problem 3. On new material there should not be a timer. It should be an option on tests and later materials once you’re more familiar. Or, give an option to override if you need it slowed or you have kids or emergencies that pull you away from learning. 4. It’s still got some major quirks. The report feature worked once, the second time it crashed mid typing, third time crashed and ended the activity. I see potential in this app. Another suggestion. Instead of a timed energy refill can you add a feature that either you watch an add or refill it by other learning challenges? Maybe this is where speed comes into play? It’s frustrating when you only have a small window for learning, can’t afford any non essential subscriptions and the free versions lock you out for a set amount of time. Please think outside the box about ways to build energy to help those of us who are wanting to learn because we feel it’s something that should be universally taught but never get access to the resources without being either privileged or medically necessary.
