Good game, but my god the ads are crazy and you can’t even pay to like fully buy the game so you don’t have to deal with ads. All good though cause this game is on the steam and gives you a better experience.

[Be forewarned that this is a long review, read this with some patience].
This game is very fun and enjoyable for just playing through the two free warfare campaigns while acting as either side of these conflicts (British/American side and the German side), with its satisfying and gritty visuals and graphics along with distinctive gameplay. Even though at first I did grow confused or frustrated at the mechanics for both campaigns, I soon learn how they work as well as come to terms that this sort of small series is entirely unique on its own as being a remastered legacy of its old flash games, even though I never grew up with such flash games, I still respect it.
However, there is a thing or two that I really want to complain about in this game: why is it that the enemy AI has a disproportionately low cooldown (or maybe no cooldown) to send in a lot of troops, tanks, and launch every fire support/artillery barrage onto me at a frequent pace?
[The following criticism mainly talks about my experience in the Warfare 1917 part of the game, particularly in its custom battles, though the 1944 part may also be taken into account, even if the custom battles there are a little easier than 1917 when choosing any difficulty].
This issue is prominent in the medium and hard difficulties when playing in either a campaign or custom battle, though this is way more noticeable in the custom battles which this is the context that I will be discussing about. Like I get that war is unfair and all, but this just takes it to a whole other level.
I can sort of tolerate the faster enemy spawns, though they tend to spam more powerful units like snipers, machine gunners, and officers, all of which were supposed to have a slightly longer cooldown than riflemen and assault units. The tank spawns are a little excessive, as even though they have long cooldowns, the enemy AI can somehow muster up 3-4 tanks in the first minute of a custom battle while I can barely scrape up 2 tanks at the same time, which combined with the faster enemy troop spawns, will absolutely decimate my forces.
Additionally, it seems like after the AI sends in any troop unit, they quickly send in a tank some seconds later, despite the “sending one unit resets ALL unit timers” that we players have to abide by in the 1917 section of the game, like if I decided to send in riflemen when my tank cooldown is almost done, then that tank cooldown will reset the moment I send in any troop unit and have to wait for that very long cooldown due to my mistake of not waiting a couple seconds to get the tank, seems to not apply for the AI.
As for the fire support, now that’s where most of my gripe is. Here I am patiently waiting for the cooldowns of my fire support after I launched just 1 of them at a time. As for the AI, whenever they send in either 1 mortar, artillery, gas, or anti-tank, they send in 2 and sometimes 3 more of the same thing. To put it simply, if the AI wants to send in mortars at me, I get 3 and sometimes 4 of the same thing in total, all at once! They want to send in artillery? They send me 3 of it. They want to send in gas? I get hit with 3 gas attacks. And the same thing goes for anti-tank.
I should specify that the troop, tank, and fire support issue can be all seen when playing on a medium length map in a 1917 custom battle on both medium and hard difficulties, so you might not see the issues in either a small or long length map.
Like I really enjoy this game and would come back to play it, it’s just that the AI spawn rate of its troops, tanks, and fire support may need to be toned down or at least equal to the player’s cooldown.
Lastly, all these disadvantages against the player really does make me wonder why the upgrade skill tree system from the campaigns are not also implemented into the custom battles as things you can pick or adjust if you want to give yourself more of a challenge or an advantage against the AI.
Sure there are some things carried over such as the grenade or air support feature in the 1944 section for example, where in the campaign, you have to unlock them via the skill tree, but when you play in a custom battle, the grenade and air support, as well as a few others, are included automatically.
However, all other upgrades are only exclusive to the campaign mode, such as reduced cooldown by a certain percentage(s) of how fast you can deploy troops; the reduced troop cost in the 1944 campaign if one chooses to do a custom battle in that era; faster cooldown speed for fire support; additional shells for your fire support barrages; more damage to your gas attacks as well as having them linger longer when deploying them; having either more defense or damage to your troops; etc.
These omissions of many upgrade skill tree perks from custom battles essentially has the player be thrust into a battle in their default strength like they do at the start of a new campaign.
All in all, my experience with battling the AI, particularly in custom battles, is to put it quite frankly, incredibly one-sided and just practically unfair to almost the highest degree if one chooses to play in a 1917 custom battle. And even though 1944 custom battles are more easier, to reiterate again, it may also need to be taken into account.
Thank you for reading my review.
