User Reviews

Users praise OnX Fish for being easy to learn, rich in data, and strong offline maps, with useful species filters and spot discovery. Repeated concerns center on limited geographic coverage and slow state releases, inconsistent contour/depth accuracy, missing lake bottom type data, and perceived poor value for the price, especially versus OnX Hunt. Data gaps in the Great Lakes/Midwest regions further affect usefulness for Midwest anglers.
Pros
  • Very easy to get the hang of; intuitive interface.
  • Offers more information than competing apps.
  • Excellent offline maps.
  • Species data and filters are helpful for fishing decisions.
  • Good at helping discover new fishing spots.
Cons
  • Geographic coverage is limited and state map releases are delayed; Nebraska is not yet available and there’s no clear timeline for others like California, Oregon, and Washington.
  • Contour/topo data is often unreliable or lacks detail; multiple MN lakes and Great Lakes areas have depth lines that are off or missing.
  • Lake bottom type information is missing, reducing overall depth context.
  • Subscription price feels high and not clearly worth it given the features (and comparisons to OnX Hunt).
  • Data gaps for major regions (Great Lakes and certain key Midwest lakes) limit usefulness for Midwest anglers.

I have used a lot of mapping for many decades. I was hoping on X Fish would have the level of detail that could help you make decisions on where to go to zoom in on exact structure. They simply are not there yet. It will help with general information, but does not get you very detailed contours. Easy to use however. Interaction is great. Just need better maps.

Now with this app, and the subscription that is very cheap, I can go to my favorite spots and know which areas, and sometimes what lures to throw for whatever species. I do wish that they added more lure recommendations though. But great app!

I live in Northern MN so that is where I primarily fish. You are missing over half of the lakes that Navionics has maps for but you do not. Why would I pay $35/ year for maps for only most of the big lakes. I expect more from OnX. Not less. This is app is disappointing until you have all of the maps. The DNR has them available. I won’t use this anymore until they cover all the lakes.
