User Reviews

Users praise Roots for reducing screen time and improving focus, especially for students, thanks to its design, flexibility, and responsive support. However, recurring issues limit its appeal: frequent bugs and instability in blocking and tracking; unreliable unblock flows; inaccurate usage reporting; and pricing concerns over paid tiers and trial prompts. When functioning well, it’s a powerful, customizable tool, but reliability and cost are the top drawbacks echoed across reviews.
Pros
  • Significantly reduces screen time and boosts focus, helping with studying and productivity.
  • Highly customizable, with multiple modes, strictness levels, and goal-based blocking.
  • Strong support from the Roots team; founders are helpful and responsive.
  • Great design and user experience; easy to use and effective blocking.
  • Helpful for students and accessible, with scholarships and affordable options.
Cons
  • Bugs and instability frequently affect blocking and time tracking, sometimes making it unusable.
  • Pricing concerns: free options dwindling, paywalls, and high premium costs (sometimes cited as around $60/year).
  • Unblocking and blocking features sometimes fail or require reloads; app can be slow or glitchy.
  • Time tracking can be inaccurate, counting time when not using blocked apps or misreporting usage.
  • Intrusive prompts and forced trial experiences (unescapable pro trial, hard-to-exit free trials).

Having used this service for almost a year now, I can confidently say it’s worth the subscription. It’s easy to use, easy to enforce discipline with edit locking, and the developers are always willing to help out if you’re running into any issues. That’s all you can ask for really.

I have an active roots subscriptions through August 22. I have not used the app in a while but since I am taking a class this summer I wanted to take advantage of my subscription. I am unable to login using my Apple ID and when I use the option to sign in via email and use the password reset option, it says there is no account that exists under my email address. It is extremely frustrating to pay for a premium service and be unable to use it. There are no answers on the website and the customer service form is a joke. I have tried a reboot of the app, deleting and redownloading, and restarting my phone and nothing works. I feel like they just took my money and since I turned off the automatic renewal decided they no longer need to service my account.
