Features & Capabilities

THX tune-up is an interactive app that guides you through calibrating your display and speakers. It provides video tests and tutorials to help you verify aspect ratios, brightness, contrast, color, and tint, as well as audio checks for speaker assignment and phase across 2-channel and 5.1 setups.

Note that it is not a professional calibration tool. The app requires supported iOS devices and specific connections (HDMI adapters and cables, or AirPlay with Apple TV 3rd gen), and it includes extras like THX trailers and the Deep Note to showcase your tuned system.

User Reviews

Users largely praise THX Tune-Up for practical SDR picture adjustments, easy guidance, and cross-device usefulness, especially since it’s free. However, it’s widely seen as outdated and limited (no HDR/DV, few patterns), with frequent stability and compatibility issues on newer iOS devices. Some content doesn’t work, and setup often requires external connections. Overall, it’s a helpful but aging tool that would benefit from a real update.
Pros
  • Helps improve TV picture quality (brightness, contrast, color, tint) for SDR content with easy-to-follow guidance.
  • Easy-to-use, with clear, understandable walkthroughs for calibrating settings.
  • Includes a fun and notable feature (the deep note) that users enjoy.
  • Works across multiple setups (AirPlay 2, Apple TV, HDMI adapters) to standardize TV appearance across devices.
  • Free and long-standing tool that many users find useful for getting more out of their TV.
Cons
  • Outdated and infrequently updated; not optimized for recent iOS devices or screen sizes.
  • Lacks HDR10 and Dolby Vision test patterns; SDR-focused with limited calibration options.
  • Stability and compatibility issues on newer devices (crashes, won’t open, casting/mirroring problems).
  • Some content/features don’t work (THX trailers, streaming content) and require external connections to function.
  • Not a plug-and-play solution; relies on external hardware (AirPlay/HDMI adapters) and may feel clunky or unsupported.

As someone who’s a big THX fanatic, I was surprised to find there’s an app from them! I think it’s pretty cool, but it could use an update. Plus I am unable to play the THX trailers this app offers. I could see this app being sort of forgotten, but I think a nice, solid update would be refreshing. Otherwise, I like it! Hopefully THX sees this

After I have my new Samsung tv on my birthday, I never got chance to do so until I got today. But pictures looks great on my new TV, and sounds speakers so I hear them and see it. I can stream anytime with Samsung TV Plus, Paramount+, and anything like YouTube. Wow. I can play games better than a old analog tv. Thanks, THX.

So good news is even after all these years with no updates it still works, so if your having issues follow my method, I mirrored this app to my OLED 4k TV, I have the old 5th Gen 4K Apple TV and was having issues at first like some of the reviews until I set it up differently, before I begin I went to the equipment section (Picture of the TV) and picked my TV brand and Apple TV as my connection I chose no sound bar since I’m not using one, I’m not sure if this is necessary but I was having issues so I decided to configure it and see if it worked. 1. Open the app and click get started on the home page, video will begin 2. Then on your iPhone go swipe down or up (depending how old your iPhone is) and find the screen mirroring option and click on your Apple TVs name 3. Your TV will connect and It will be a black screen but you will hear the ladies voice starting the video 4. On your iPhone exit the video, and restart the video 5. The video will show up on your TV working immediately, if you want to watch it then turn your iPhone side ways (landscape mode) so it shows it in full screen, you can now exit the video on your phone and go to the adjustment section ( wrench and screw driver picture) and begin, when moving from section to section you can hold it normal, you only need to hold it in landscape mode when your doing the tests so that the the images fill up your whole screen. Enjoy !
