Features & Capabilities

Art of Weird blends traditional oil-painting vibes with wildly imaginative tools like Worm Pen and Pods to spark awe, joy, and even rage. The app features live-calculated brushes that interact with a uniquely generated, non-repeating canvas texture, creating endlessly surprising results. Your fingertip drives stroke width, so painting with a finger feels distinctly different from pressing with a whole finger or using an Apple Pencil.

Designed for comfort and versatility, the toolbar can be swiped to the left for left-handed users, and most controls can be adjusted on the fly while you paint. It supports multiple layers, full-screen painting, dark mode, landscape/portrait layouts, wide color, and a photo tracing mode (Pro). The Pro upgrade unlocks all features across iPad, iPhone, and Mac, with the engine built on Metal (128-bit color) and Swift. The result is a bold, immersive art-making experience.

User Reviews

Users praise Art of Weird for its unique brushes and textures, fun and approachable use, and strong color options, with good cross-device usability and ongoing updates. Common drawbacks include UI/UX learning curves, missing features (color picker, delete-import workflow), and concerns about app fragmentation and value. Overall, it's viewed as a creative tool with potential but usability and feature gaps to address.
Pros
  • Unique brushes and textures (e.g., worm brush) that encourage experimentation.
  • Fun and approachable for artists of all levels.
  • Extensive toolset with appealing color options and ready-made color choices.
  • Works across devices (iPad and computer) and benefits from ongoing updates.
  • Generally positive reception and fit within the developer’s art app ecosystem.
Cons
  • Perceived lower quality relative to other design apps; some reviews say it needs improvement.
  • UI/UX has a learning curve and some features are not intuitive (e.g., deleting an imported image while coloring).
  • App fragmentation: multiple similar apps from the same developer; many users wish for a single consolidated app.
  • Missing essential features like a color picker.
  • Mixed views on value; some reviews say it isn’t worth downloading or should be uninstalled.

I just wish, since this developer’s art apps aside from Chill Paint all work the exact same, that they were one app instead of many so you could combine all the weird fun brushes and just make one purchase instead of several for the same features. Still, even for the worm brush alone, it’s worth a download. It’s a lot like drawing with layers of foam and has such a unique funky texture. Highly recommend for experimentation and art block!
