User Reviews

Prepware Instrument Pilot is popular for study and can help with learning concepts, featuring a simple layout and affordable price. However, many reviews criticize outdated or incomplete content, mismatched figures, and questions not aligning with the real exam. Progress tracking can be weak, and update-related UI issues arise. It’s best used as a supplementary tool rather than the sole prep method.
Pros
  • Helps study and can aid in passing the instrument written when used with focused study.
  • Simple, straightforward layout that makes the app easy to use.
  • Provides explanations for answers, aiding understanding of concepts.
  • Affordable value for the price (perceived as a good deal around $10).
  • Offline usability (does not require internet for study sessions) in some reviews.
Cons
  • Instrument question bank is outdated/inaccurate and incomplete; many FAA questions are missing or differ from the real exam.
  • Figures in questions are missing, wrong, or irrelevant; some questions have no figures.
  • Progress tracking/marking features are unreliable; marks may not persist and there are no useful progress reports; randomization complicates review.
  • Content may not reflect current FAA exam; many users report unseen questions and advise using additional resources; not reliable as the sole study method.
  • UI/UX issues after updates (color-coding after grading, dark mode problems, display issues) hinder studying.

Now don’t get me wrong Prepware is one of my favorite apps when it’s comes to studying for writtens I use it for everything. Private pilot, airframe mechanic, powerplant mechanic, general written exam for mechanics, and now my instrument. So I’m very familiar with this app and it’s accuracy for writtens and usually it is spot on when it comes to question answers and wording but for my instrument rating airplane it was different. I studied hard on it taking quizzes and scoring 90’s so I said it’s time for the real written to be taken. I went I took it I failed and I was amazed how many questions I had never seen. So I beat myself up and studied harder and went back to take the written again and once again I saw questions I had never even seen before and got an even lower score after studying even more. So I did what I didn’t want to do cause I don’t care for the software and switched to Sheppard air and I have to admit almost 80%+ of the questions on there were worded entirely different and there’s 200+ more questions to study. So not only did prepware let me down with the wording of questions but it also doesn’t have the entire written question bank. All I ask from prepware is to make sure all their software is up to date and has all the questions the FAA has for each written.
