LapTimer offers more than 1300 predefined tracks world wide. With its assistants, it is extremely easy to setup - just click your track and drive. It fully automates your lap timing using GPS, and presents the results to all kinds of media.

You are not limited to track driving only. For example, you may define your home and working locations as a 'track', collect statistics on different ways chosen, and analyze / optimize the time used every day.

Want to show your drive to your friends? LapTimer Petrolhead and above generates beautiful in car video recordings with all kinds of data overlaid, ready to be presented - e.g. on youtube. Even without video, recorded data can be analyzed using purpose designed views, making it easy to analyze and improve your driving performance.

Using online racing, you can use LapTimer in competition. LapTimer offers a Hall of Fame, allows watching you and your friends on track - all in real time. Compare your sector times, braking / acceleration points, and learn from each other.

You can start with your plain iPhone in the beginning and add external GPS and OBD II sensors later, step by step, and as you need it. LapTimer itself comes in three different editions: LapTimer Rookie is the entry level with all you need for lap timing; LapTimer Petrolhead is the advanced version including lots of video features, and LapTimer Grand Prix is the edition for professionals including Multi Cam recording, Health Kit integration, and advanced sensor and analytics functionality.

Please note that functionality depends on your device, the LapTimer edition chosen, and sometimes even external sensors added (like OBD II). Please visit our web page to get the full story. All edition can be upgraded later, all editions come with native iPhone and iPad support.

There are quite expensive stand alone solutions for track days available. Be smart and own the leading edge tool simply by using your iPhone and LapTimer. User Reviews

Harry's LapTimer Rookie is praised for a deep feature set, strong data analysis and export options, and good support from the developer, especially when used with external GPS hardware. Many users consider it excellent value, with lap times that compare well to transponders. However, repeated reliability problems, a steep learning curve, and inconsistent GPS performance are common complaints. Users cite crashes, data loss, hard-to-find results, track database gaps, and background/auto-lock issues. Overall it’s a powerful tool if you’re willing to invest time and external gear to get reliable results.
Pros
  • Powerful feature set for track data logging with multiple modes (classic timer, video, speedometer, analysis) making it a capable HPDE tool.
  • Excellent value and positive reception for the price, with pro version adding useful features.
  • Strong compatibility with external GPS hardware and other gadgets (TomTom mount, 5Hz GPS, OBD, camera feeds) leading to accurate lap times in many reviews.
  • Responsive developer support and ongoing updates, including a user forum.
  • Good data export and analysis capabilities (PDF/Google Earth map exports; built-in analysis) that aid sharing and evaluating laps.
Cons
  • Reliability issues and data loss: crashes, failures to record laps or save videos, and frequent instability.
  • Steep learning curve and lack of clear in-app instructions, making setup and usage non-intuitive.
  • GPS signal reliability problems with internal GPS; many users rely on external GPS for accuracy.
  • In-app background operation issues: cannot run in background while recording video, auto-lock/battery drain concerns.
  • Track/map setup and data navigation challenges: missing tracks, difficult to find results, and cumbersome data exploration.

This app is not easy to use and even if you learn how to use it, it doesn’t function properly most of the time. I did 50 laps at Laguna Seca last weekend with my phone connected to my GoPro and my OBDLinkMX+ and neither the GoPro footage nor the OBD data was recorded for even a single lap. At the beginning of each session I carefully made sure everything was configured correctly, thinking “maybe it will work this time”, but no. This app does not work well at all. It is a legacy app that hasn’t been updated very well over time and is lacking in reliability/ease of use. I do not recommend wasting nearly $30 on it. If you are just looking to time your laps, the super basic version might be okay to use. Personally I wish I had listened to the reviews before wasting my money on this app. Do not make the same mistake I did.

I downloaded this app last year for a DE weekend. At the time, I found it very user in friendly and annoying, but at least it saved my videos and times. Yesterday I used it again for the second time: it froze in the middle of data transfer to my phone, crashed, and then proceeded to delete an entire day worth of lap videos. And then it did it to me again today. RIP video of COTA PR time. Harold and his developers should be ashamed to be selling this app. It is absolute rubbish.
